Setting training intervals

Former Member
Directly from the Garmin website: "Creating an Interval Workout
Select Training > Intervals > Edit > Interval > Type.
Select Distance, Time, or Open.
TIP: You can create an open-ended interval by setting the type to Open.
If necessary, enter a distance or time interval value for the workout, and select .
Select Rest.
Select Distance, Time, or Open.
If necessary, enter a distance or time value for the rest interval, and select .
Select one or more options:
To set the number of repetitions, select Repeat.
To add an open-ended warm up to your workout, select Warm Up > On.
To add an open-ended cool down to your workout, select Cool Down > On."

My question is, WHERE do you do this? I can't find anything on the app, the computer application or on the watch itself. Nothing to set intervals, nothing for programs. Anyone know?
  • Look at Garmin Connect, the website, under Workouts.

    HTH

    CW
  • Select Training > Intervals > Edit > Interval > Type.

I can't find anything on the app, the computer application or on the watch itself.

On the FR235, from the watch face, press [SUP]Training[/SUP][SUP]Intervals[/SUP][SUP]Edit[/SUP][SUP]Interval[/SUP][SUP]Type[/SUP] to execute that selection sequence.

Thanks, except there is no "Training."
There's TRAINING PLANS and WORKOUTS, neither of which allow you to set intervals.
You can create all kinds of workouts but I want the guidance provided by what's given in the instructions above, setting times for segments.
I got this watch to set intervals, and I feel like it should not be this hard. So far I 'm unable to use it to do this one simple thing. Any ideas?
  • Funny, I see exactly what ASmugDill says on Run/Run Indoors/Cycle/Other. You won't see TRAINING-INTERVALS if Apps is selected though (select TRAINING to see the INTERVALS option).

  • There's TRAINING PLANS and WORKOUTS,
    Huh?

Are you referring to options under the ≡ menu in Garmin Connect online (in your browser)?

There is no ‘Training Plan’ in any menu in the menu tree on the Forerunner‑235 as of firmware 4.x, as far as I know. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though.

    …setting times for segments.
What segments? Are you talking about Strava segments? Intervals have nothing to do with segments in that sense, and as far as I know, the Forerunner‑235 is not even aware of segments and has no concept of such.

I think you'll find all the details necessary in this thread already, but if you're new to this watch some additional guidance may help:

    - if you want to do "simple" repeats, you can start an activity directly on the watch (for example, I do 1K intervals in this form: warm-up until I press the "next" button"; then 6 x 1K - the watch keeps track of the distance and signals when I've done 1000m, the pace is up to me - with a 2 min rest interval - the watch tracks the rest time and signals when the the next run part is about to start, I run, walk or stand as I please during the rest; then cool-down until I press the "next" button; done). All this is configurable on the watch directly - the button sequence is specified by ASmugDill in this thread

    - if you require a more "complex" structure for your workout (maybe you don't want the same distance or rest for each interval leg, or want to add target guidance such as a certain pace?), you will instead have to go to the Garmin Connect website and select Workouts from the menu (as specified by CHUNKYWIZARD). There you can create a custom workout with a multitude of options, and save it to your profile. From there you can, when done, send it to your watch (device), making it appear in the watch's menu (as for "simple" workouts, you'll do Run->Menu->Training, but My Workouts rather than Intervals). The saved workout will also be visible in the phone app under More->Workouts, from where you can also load it onto the watch if you didn't do that on the website. It would be ideal if it were possible to create and edit structured workouts directly in the phone app, but that doesn't seem to be the case (yet?).

Yes, I am. Because that's the only menu I have, the menu at the left. There is no menu across the top. I am not talking about Straa segments because I do not know what they are.

All I am hoping to do is find the instructions I mention above. The horizontal menu does not exist, and as far as I can find, neither does TRAINING.

I really appreciate all your help. I guess I'm just not cut out to use one of these things, though they are touted as easy: when what you see is not what is represented in any way in the instructions, and there is no customer support, a very expensive item becomes useless.

I wonder why I do not see it?

Funny, I don't see that at all. I have a vertical menu down the side that offers these options:
    Activities
    BAdges
    Calendar
    Calories In/Out
    Challenges
    Connections
    Courses
    Devices
    Floors Climbed
    Gear
    Goals
    Groups
    Heart Rate
    Insights Intensity Minutes
    Personal Records
    Reports
    Segments
    Sleep
    Steps
    Training Plans
    Weight
    Workouts

Thanks so much for this explanation.
It's frustrating when directions bear no resemblance to the actual item. And I still don't know why I can't see what you see. But you have helped me get started and that's awesome.

I honestly think I would have been better off with a $1 kitchen timer stuck in my running shorts, which is what I was trying to avoid.
  • Hey Kim, I now see the confusion. I am referring to the watch itself. As ASmugDill showed, press your Run button (top right, make sure any activity other than Apps is displayed), and you should see Up Arrow= Activity and Down Arrow = Menu ... press Down twice and you should see Training. Select Training with the Run button and you can scroll Down to Intervals.

On the website ... on the list you show above, go all the way down to Workouts - Create a Workout. Once you have created/saved it, go back to the original list and click Workouts again. You should see a list of workouts you have created. To the right you should see 2 diagonal arrows - clicking on them will SEND TO DEVICE (or click on the workout and click on "Send to Device" on the right). You will need to Connect your watch to PC and update via Garmin Express (I don't think it will sync from your phone , but I may be wrong ... GE is how I always do it anyway)

Once the workout has been sent to your device, access it just like in the first paragraph, but when in Training scroll to My Workouts instead (I think that will be displayed initially by default).
