Step Goal Notification?

FR235 (or FR230) Am I missing something? Think other models show fireworks, personally I always liked the simple vibrate on my wrist when I reached my step goal for the day. I have not been able to find that feature in my 235. Is it there?

(If set)Signal when you don't move, signal at each mile(lap), but no something when I reach my goal?
  • Are you planning on/expecting to doing something different once step goal is reached?

    Is it there?
    No.

(If set)Signal when you don't move,
Because it tells the FR235 user he/she needs to move, i.e. do something different.

    signal at each mile(lap),
I suppose there are those runners who want their runs broken up into stretches of regular length for analysis purposes. Personally, each ‘lap’ alert tells me I should do something different next – change speed (from run to walk, or vice versa), stop the timed activity or start cooling down (after 6‑km), etc.

but no something when I reach my goal?
Are you relying on the alert on the watch to tell you to do something different, before you are likely to have the opportunity to review your performance in Garmin Connect (Mobile app, or online)? Will you stop walking after reaching the daily step goal? Speed up? Slow down? I don't think most users would, but of course I'm not saying you won't or can't.

The (visual, audible and/or vibrating) alerts on the watch are not for ‘celebrating’ any achievement. In fact, when I get a new personal record (say, for 5km) and/or achieve a higher VO2Max on a timed run I just concluded and saved, the FR235 still won't beep or buzz to alert me of such news.

personally I always liked the simple vibrate on my wrist when I reached my step goal for the day.
Personally I like it that the FR235 doesn't. (Yes, you could suggest that Garmin implement a toggle that gives the user a choice, just like it has for Move alerts, for what is not a de facto requirement for celebratory alerts on a 24×7 activity tracker.)

Agree, I think it's absurd it doesn't do anything when you hit the goal; what's the point of having it otherwise? Every activity tracker on the planet does this, and really makes the funcitionality feel tacked on.
  • what's the point of having it otherwise?
The daily step goal is used by the cloud-based Garmin Connect service to determine the length of your goal streak, and also affects how Garmin Connect presents each bar on the Steps chart (online, and/or in Garmin Connect Mobile apps). The watch itself doesn't do anything with it.

and really makes the funcitionality feel tacked on.
I have no illusions that the 24×7 activity tracking functions was not tacked on to the FR235 simply to increase market appeal in a “me too” kinda way. The TomTom Spark is similar in that way.
  • I've seen the fireworks animation on my buddy's Fenix 3 and his Wife's Vivoactive. I always tried to check my watch around the time I'd hit my step goal to see if I had it, but kind of forgot about it.

I found the release notes for the Vivoactive updates. The step goal/fireworks page was added in quite some time ago. I don't see any reason why they couldn't add it to the FR235.

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:
Added new settings to control the intensity of vibrations
Added the ability to cache the most recently played Golf course and play it again without needing a phone connection
Fix an issue that caused long activities to not upload immediately
Added a new fireworks page to congratulate the user on achieving his daily step goal
More fixes to improve battery life and other minor improvements/bug fixes
    Updated to ConnectIQ SDK 1.1.1

  • I admit that on watches that have a setting for goal alerts, I turn it off...

But in many of my watchfaces, I have the option where the color used to display the step count changes when you hit your step goal to indicate it so you can see if you hit your goal at a glance. I also have an option in some where it displays the difference from your step goal along with your steps (a +/- number)
  • jim, I think the issue is that some users are expecting their activity trackers to serve as their personal cheering squad that will pay attention to their performance, and tell them as soon as they reach their goal (even though they personally need do nothing different once the daily goal is achieved). Being able to see one's performance against the goal at a glance on the watch face is still a case of paying attention to oneself (when one can be bothered to look) and review tracked/collected data, which apparently isn't enough for some.

I personally find seeking that kind of motivation and/or encouragement to be indicative of more of a shortcoming, that one could say about not having congratulatory/celebratory alerts being a shortcoming in an activity tracker.

    re: step notification

    No.

Because it tells the FR235 user he/she needs to move, i.e. do something different.

I actually have that turned off. I don't care if I'm moving or not. Different? NO

Again: NO, not going to do something different. But during my day, trying to reach my goal, a quiet vibrate is nice, I don't have to do 'extra' to reach my goal, don't have to even glance at my watch or study connect.

If I choose to 'celebrate' when my watch beeps at mile 1 or mile 10, I am celebrating. I keep track of my laps without ever looking at my watch.

Personally I like it that the FR235 doesn't. (Yes, you could suggest that Garmin implement a toggle that gives the user a choice, just like it has for Move alerts, for what is not a de facto requirement for celebratory alerts on a 24×7 activity tracker.)

Customization of faces and fields are also not a requirement for an activity tracker - what's your point?

My 235 provides no motivation or encouragement (and thank goodness you don't either). I want a notification, nothing more. If its raining and my watch is covered by a jacket, I like a silent vibrate to let me know each mile, personal tracking. I don't want to even have to look at my watch except the beginning and end of a run or race. If I'm swimming, kinda difficult to have to look at my watch to see I've covered a mile or whatever I've set up as a lap.

Your responses have been horrible and absolutely zero help.
