WHR (Wrist Heart Rate) / Sensor Hub firmware module 2.60

Seeing as the discussion threads on Sensor Hub (WHR – Wrist Heart Rate) firmware module v2.41 and v2.50 have been closed, and nobody has yet created a new thread for the just-released v2.60, I guess I'll do the honours. Here we go!

  • Announcement by Garmin (on 12 April 2016 at 18:34 GMT)

Changes made from version 2.50 to 2.60:
  • Increase fidelity of the all-day heart rate plot
  • Improve cadence rejection
  • Improve performance during interval activities

N.B. Firmware v4.20 for the Forerunner 230/235 was also announced separately at around the same time.

  • It's AWESOME Garmin! Nicely done, now 235 looks like a real sports tracker watch with All day HRM.

What the hell? People are posting on how whr 2.60 has eliminated the occasional spikes on the 4 hour HR chart. I'm having the complete opposite effect. Prior to 2.60, I'd occasionally get spikes in the 120's. I'd maybe see 2 or 3 of these in a day. I downloaded 2.60 this morning and things are terrible. I did a HIIT workout with a chest strap earlier reaching 152 bpm. Since then I have been relaxing in the backyard in a lawn chair. My 4 hour chart shows spikes of 161, 141, 134, 152 and 137. I can't possibly be the only having this problem. Anyone else seeing this kind of behavior? Less than 16 hrs into the day and my 235 says I've burned 2881 calories including a 400 calorie workout. Something's off.

Yes. I'm seeing spikes too and more often. I don't think they fixed what's causing the bad reads. They're just sampling more often so the duration of a spike is much lower and I'd prefer this than an hour of 150bpm HR when I'm just sitting down falsely adding like 500kcal. I think as they are sampling more often, more number of spikes are likely to occur by sheer probability.

I have noticed it does add a little bit more to total daily calories but not as much as it did previously. Hopefully, future updates will refine this behaviour further. But it's much much much better than before IMO.
  • RHR became worse in my case...

Before update it stabilized at 50+- (my real one now is 54-56 in the morning) and in the morning it was 44 and now - 37!!! It's owfull, GC shows also not much reliable 46!!!
  • My guess though is that some people who weren't having problems before will now have issues with the new algorithms causing cadence lock that they didn't have happening before.

As one who only had cadence lock when it was cold I truly hope not. As my first run with the updates I did 3x2 mile intervals yesterday and had no problems (although there was a spike at the end of the 2nd interval) so I'm pretty confident that it'll continue to work well for me.

It at right about the HR I was expecting and also followed the increase/decrease as I went up and down the gradual inclines of the loop I was running.

My spikes are crazy. Looks like I was getting them hourly while I was awake. Several in the 160's just sitting around the house. Burned 1200 more calories yesterday than average. RHR only dropped by 3 for the first night. Hopefully day 2 the spikes will settle down. Yesterday's all day HR graph looks like the readings for a Hummingbird.

First cadence lock after upgrade to 4.2

I've never had this problem before. But after installing 4.2 and 2.6 :

Sorry to quote myself :) But today HRM was quite OK. The same route, man, watch, pace.

  • 17mile run today, not a single cadence lock despite my watch getting a bit slippery late in the run from sweaty wrist and dehydration shrinkage.
Heart rate looked quite reasonable per my effort so I know it wasn't just making up HR numbers based on my pace - HR would go up on the uphills despite me getting slower, and drop on the downhills even though my pace picked up. It was also matching up for sections where I pushed harder or slowed down.

By far the best it has performed in the last 5 months. Before, I would almost always get a least a minute or two (or sometimes the whole last half of the run) of cadence lock late on any longer run, when my watch starts to become a little less tight or get slippery.

That makes two consecutive runs (27+ total miles) without any issues. Very well done, if this is how it stays then I am quite satisfied.
  • I'll just leave this here:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1131568326

10kms run and it didn't even once get my HR right. Since the update the watch is no longer useless for intervals, it's now also useless for steady runs of 10kms.
Also, it seems that today I had a 125bpm spike after getting up from bed. So, according to this OHR I get a higher heart rate by getting up from bed than from running 10kms under 5m/km.

PS: I've resetted to factory settings after the update just to ensure I had a "fresh" device.
I'm seriously considering asking Garmin an exchange of the product. This cannot be the normal behavior of a 300+ euros sports watch.

Same issue here, could not get my HR during the entire run...
The two spikes you can see are when I tried to remove my watch and put it back again.
I never had this issue before the update.
