WHR (Wrist Heart Rate) / Sensor Hub firmware module 2.60

Seeing as the discussion threads on Sensor Hub (WHR – Wrist Heart Rate) firmware module v2.41 and v2.50 have been closed, and nobody has yet created a new thread for the just-released v2.60, I guess I'll do the honours. Here we go!

  • Announcement by Garmin (on 12 April 2016 at 18:34 GMT)

Changes made from version 2.50 to 2.60:
  • Increase fidelity of the all-day heart rate plot
  • Improve cadence rejection
  • Improve performance during interval activities

N.B. Firmware v4.20 for the Forerunner 230/235 was also announced separately at around the same time.

_
  • Heart rate no longer reported as 72 by the sensor by default. Lovely!

The issue of the optical heart rate sensor reporting a default value of 72 beats per minute to the watch's application code (e.g. the Heart Rate widget, Run mode tracking), before it has actually locked on to a usable reading, appears to have been fixed.

Now, when I go into the Heart Rate widget, instead of seeing a flashing heart icon for just five seconds and then a rapid stabilisation to invariably 72 bpm when the heart icon becomes static, I get a flashing heart icon for about 20 seconds while the sensor attempts to lock on to my current heart rate.

With WHR 2.60, on occasion I've seen a rapid change to the heart rate reading after the heart icon becomes static, but at least now I feel more confident that the sensor is reporting what it has actually detected thus far – smoothing over an initial interval of 20 seconds, I suppose – instead of returning a dummy (and false) value.

That is certainly an improvement from my perspective.

    Aside:
This WHR change would have nothing to do with and no impact on the ‘heart rate stuck on 66’ issue with the Heart Rate widget. If anyone is seeing different behaviour in the widget in the event that it fails to get a value returned by the sensor hub module, it would logically be due to changes in firmware 4.20 and not in WHR 2.60.
  • Haven't gone for a run with the update yet, but happy with what I'm seeing as well. It's more logical, and something you'd expect on other trackers with OHM. Wish it would lock faster, but at this point I'm just happy with the progress. Shows they're listening!
  • Did an 8 mile run and I only got cadence lock twice. Once was very brief and unnoticed until later. The other lasted just a minute or so and occurred while I let my watch slide up my wrist and it got loose.

One run is not enough to declare improvement, but regardless, today's run is the most accurate in terms of HR that I have had in weeks.

this is probably a silly question, but I just did an update though Garmin Express for the first time. How do I know that it also did this update?

Actually, it's Menu»Settings»System»About ( from the watch face).

Well it's given me a resting HR of 37 today - around 14 lower than my previous average, and 11 lower than my previous minimum.

This seems unlikely to me (as far as I know, I am still alive.)

i have the same problem. Or my hear rate just disappears saying " --" . Great! Not!
  • I have the same issue. My resting heart rate used to be around 48 witch I think is accurate and now I have a resting heart rate of 38...Testing...

    Intervals

I'd given up using the OHR for interval sessions (even long intervals) but I tried it out his lunchtime. I must say I'm happy enough with the improvement. It's still in 3rd place behind my Mio Link in 2nd and the strap in 1st, but it is quite close to the Mio to be fair. Definitely usable now for interval workouts. I'll do a few 30 second strides at the weekend to check out the perfomance over shorter intervals. ANd no cadence lock, although I hadn't seen that for quite a while since I started wearing it higher up my arm. If the watch behaved like this when I first bought it I don't think I'd ever have had an issue with it. The only problem I have now is that it's starting to warm up here and the watch keeps slipping down when I sweat. Any suggestions?
