warm up/cool down

I've asked this question in other forums but haven't been able to get an answer. It should be a simple question.

I am creating a workout in Garmin connect. I begin my runs with a 5 min warm up (brisk walk) and end runs with a 5 min (brisk walk). However, I do not want the Workout stats to report that I ran 4.8 miles when I only ran 4. Sure with the warm up and cool down it was that far. However, that screws up the data when it is exported to strava or another program. I don't mind seeing that I ran 4.8 miles, but how can you edit the pace out so it isn't skewing up the miles I ran?
  • Why not split out your cool down/ warm up into separate activites?

  • Sometimes simple questions go unanswered because nobody knows the answer.

For example, I can't think of any way to do what you want. I suspect you can't. As in I don't think the Garmin watches do what you ask.

CHUNKYWIZARD's advice is spot-on; if you don't want your warmup/cooldown included in your recorded activity, just don't start the activity until you want it to begin recording, then stop the activity when you're done.

This is what I initially thought. However, what if I want to know the total distance including warmup and cooldown? Without having to start and stop different activities is there another option?
  • No there is isn't not using the device. To do what you want you need to do three separate activities.

However, Garmin Connect will show you the laps you recorded so it's easy enough to see what you did. Strava does the same, well at least the premium version does.

So you want it to simultaneously both include and exclude your warmup and cooldown...?

About the only thing you can do is manually trigger a lap at the end of your warmup and again when you start your cooldown, then you can tally the workouts separately on your own a bit more easily in the Garmin app. But there's not going to be anything you can do to make it automatically able to read your mind and export/display exactly only the portions of the activity that you deem acceptable for Strava. If you want them truly separate, do separate activities. If you want them together, do one activity. But it can't be both ways at the same time.

I guess I will create separate activities. Does warm up and cool down especially at a walking pace have any effect on recovery advisor, race predictor or VO2 max?

I would say probably but only a little.

I think for what you are looking for, just don't record anything for your warm-ups and cool-downs. If they are really that easy, just let general activity track your steps and calories and save the tracked activity for your run.

If you want to see more data use separate activities. You can't have it both ways.

Personally I just track everything as one activity and use the lap button to end my warmup/start my run and again to stop my run/start my cooldown. That way with a little post processing of the GC data, I can work out all the stats I need for just the run, while still seeing how my warmups and cooldowns went.

Another option is to use the "crop" function if you use Strava to record your runs. That way you can have the full workout in GC and just the run activity in Strava. Of course if you want Strava to record total distance this is not an option and you would have to record the activities separately as suggested.

maybe if you make a segment of your actual run (without warming-up and cooling-down) and store it for personal use?

The crop option would be great. However, when the run from garmin syncs to strava it doesn't mark the cool down and warm up as a separate lap. So in garmin I see seven laps and strava shows four.
