warm up/cool down

I've asked this question in other forums but haven't been able to get an answer. It should be a simple question.

I am creating a workout in Garmin connect. I begin my runs with a 5 min warm up (brisk walk) and end runs with a 5 min (brisk walk). However, I do not want the Workout stats to report that I ran 4.8 miles when I only ran 4. Sure with the warm up and cool down it was that far. However, that screws up the data when it is exported to strava or another program. I don't mind seeing that I ran 4.8 miles, but how can you edit the pace out so it isn't skewing up the miles I ran?

Can't you just do it by time? If you know how long you warmed up for and cooled down for?

The crop option would be great. However, when the run from garmin syncs to strava it doesn't mark the cool down and warm up as a separate lap. So in garmin I see seven laps and strava shows four.

I guess the laps only dhow on the non-mobile version of strava. I wish I could just dele the first and last lap rather than having to use the crop slider. Would be much easier

After looking at the crop feature which I thought would have more options it's not going to be possible to do what I want. There is no time line shown. Only the map. How am I supposed to know where 5 min is at on the map?

Looks like you are correct. There is only the map and distance. You need to know how far you walk in 5 minutes and use that as a guide. Shouldn't be too far off.
Don't have any more ideas. Looks like you will have to get creative.

Use Garmin Connect to find time when pace changes? Or try SportTracks?

Couldn't you look at the pace graph in Garmin Connect to determine the correct time for when you change pace, and then use that to crop the data in Strava (I'm not a Strava user)?

Another option (admittedly looking a little bit outside the given box) is to use SportTracks (desktop version, not sure about the web version) - I've used the Split functionality there to break a given (imported) run into relevant parts, it's very easy to find the relevant spots. Then you can classify them as different Categories (say Running and Warm-up), leaving you with pretty much all options to view the data. You get views where you can see all parts individually and summarized/averaged on top.

Unfortunately strava's crop tool displays nothing about time nor pace. The only thing you can do is place the dots where you think you might have been on the map when the warm up and or cool down finished. Thus removing that part from the run.
  • When I do a race, I record my WU, the race and my WD as 3 separate activities. In any case there would be "gaps" between these 3 runs anyway.

If can be bothered might do similar for a tempo run.

I also use Strava segments to compare the "effort" parts on different days.

In your case if you warm up is a walk not a run then you could record them in the Other activity profile (maybe as a Hike) and then leave it as that or change to a walk.

Alternatively you could try a slow jog instead of a fast walk or if you have no interest in "counting" the warm up/down then just don't bother recording them.
