Can't fully charge my new Forerunner 235

Hi,

I have just bought the new Forerunner 235 and as I am trying to charge the battery, the percentage goes only to maximum of 86%. Does anybody have the same issue? Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

    Connecting to a wall socket

I have the same problem when not charging with the computer . When I connect it to a wall socket never get more than 97%, no matter the time. But if I plug it to the computer it always get 100%.

    Can´t understand it.

When I connect to a wall socket - nothing happens! Works fine connected to a PC USB but as soon as I connect it through a plug to a wall socket - nothing. What are you doing right?
  • Im having the same issue. I only bought the watch last week and it charged to 100% the 1st charge and then tired charging it the other day and it wouldnt go past 69% - tried resetting it afew times and restoring the default settings but no joy! Also had the issue with the time being wrong on the watch from auto - have to manually set it. I emailed garmin today about it!

I am seeing this issue as well. Took me quite a while to find this thread, but I guess I'm "glad" I'm seeing other people with the same issue.

When I charge it from a wall outlet, I can't get above 98%. However, if I plug it into my computer, the "plugged-in" face screen shows 100%. Disconnect from computer and my Connect IQ face again shows only 98%. Strange...
  • Don't rely on Connect IQ watch faces to report true remaining battery %

I'm not “glad”, because it annoys the OCD part of me all the same, whether the issue or “bug” affects just me or everyone else too.

How do you know? From a Connect IQ watch face? If so,
However, if I plug it into my computer, the "plugged-in" face screen shows 100%.
… then you're comparing apples and oranges.
Disconnect from computer and my Connect IQ face again shows only 98%. Strange...
So maybe the conclusion ought to be that the Connect IQ class' attribute for remaining battery life never actually returns 100%, even when the battery is fully charged? A “bug” in Connect IQ is a very different thing from a defect in the charging mechanism or the battery itself.

I was using the Countdown! watch face for a while, and on firmware v3.30, the reported remaining battery life never got higher than 98%. However, after updating the firmware to v4.10, I've seen it go up to 99% after charging from the computer's USB port. On the other hand, on the SC8 watch face, the remaining battery life never goes higher than 98% even on firmware v4.10, after charging from the computer's USB port.

As an experiment, I decided to fully charge my FR235 using a 500mA USB phone charger while I was composing this reply. I then cycled through different watch faces while the charging cable remain clamped onto the watch. Surprise, surprise…

    Same Problem

Recently purchased Garmin 235 about a month and a half ago. It used to charge up to 100% and it WILL DISPLAY 100% on the watch face. While charging on the computer by USB, the watch face will display 100%. Once I eject it, the display reads 98% or sometimes 97% and the battery loses its charge quite fast.

But are you using the standard, factory-installed Digital watch face? If you're using a Connect IQ watch face, then as I've suggested above, it's quite likely a problem with the Connect IQ API, and not a physical issue of the battery losing its charge.
  • It's common with all CIQ watchfaces, and may be partly due to the charging HW in the watch. With batteries like this, once it hits 100% (which may not be quite 100%), the charging stops until the battery level gets below a certain point (I've heard 98 or 99%), as batteries like this really don't like being overcharged. One speculation is while it's in this "stop charging" mode, the watch FW continues to display 100% to indicate you can unplug it so you don't just keep it charging, but may have dropped below that.

It's not a CIQ API problem, as the same WF will show 100% on other devices. In CIQ code, some people use a "round up" for battery level, and others just use the integer part. So if the battery level is 97.95 for example, some watchfaces will display 98% (the rounding up) and some, 97% (the integer part)

In the time I've had a 230, I've seen a CIQ watchface display 100% exactly one time, and then for less than 1 minute.. (I using the rounding up method)

Seeing 97-98% when you finish charging is the norm for the 23x/630, and not a problem. Just a quirk...
