Found a significant bug:

Yesterday, I logged a 13 mile walk as a "run" using my 235. I logged it as a run, as there is no hike or walk activity selection. I used my footpod and Garmin ANT+ Chest strap, as these are far more accurate than the watch (they need to fix this). I recorded just shy of 13 miles and 31,000 steps, and was dual gps'ing with GPS and GLONAS. All was well and good until this morning when I looked at my connect sync and noticed that it claims 30 miles and doubled the calories. It appears to me that it is taking the total steps and adding them into the formula after already logging them in the activity. This is incorrect. I noticed that my assumed active calories was also roughly doubled. This seems like it can be easily addressed, and MUST be. Has anybody else noticed this. Also, why no "hike" or "walk" activities?

I'll give the running broadcast mode after a workout next week a shot to see if it helps stabilize. Today is my day off and the HR readings seem to be closer to what i'd expect.

Back 4-5 years ago when I was actually in shape, during HIIT intervals I could get to around 205-210 according to Polar H7, which doing a manual check seemed about right. My Max HR has always seemed to tend on the slightly higher than average side, so i'm guessing I burn less then most estimates show. When I was in shape the HR would fall back down resting levels pretty quick, a bit slower now, but hopefully I can get that spring back! :)

If I sett he Max HR on the watch higher will that cause the estimated calorie count to go up or down? I'd assume down but maybe i'm wrong there?

I am guessing it would go down, but I'm no expert on Garmin's algorithms. You should set your max HR to what it actually is. Over 4-5 years it may have dropped a bit. Also if can drop if you are less fit. When you look at your exercise activities are you spending a good amount of time in the higher zones? That means you will be burning more calories. Have you checked the weight and height entries for the watch? A heavier person will burn more calories so that is another variable.

Actually i notice this bug only happen when I sync my watch via bluetooth using GC apps right after completed an activity.

When i sync my activity via Gamin Express, everything seems normal and as expected. So for any activity that i completed i will sync my watch via Garmin Express first.

I thought this bug was resolved but it hasn't been. All they did was make the steps widget and the full steps page show the same data! Itemized calories and distances for activities are still wrong.

thought the bug may have resolved itself but no such luck.. I had turned off all day heart monitoring owing to crazy high burns, i thought I'd give it another go yesterday and all appeared well until about 2000hrs when calories for steps shot up and awarded me an extra 300odd calories for doing nothing. Heart rate did not spike either so no idea where it came from. When I do turn off the all day HR however I get really low burns from my steps (around 40cals a mile).

Anyone know if we are any further forward with a solution???

I guess we just have to wait for Garmin to fix it. Or not.... Along with HR sampling. For me GC today (8:45 am) tells me I have "gained" 451 calories already. I have one activity this morning. An Indoor bike ride which has given me 825 calories. (I am OK with that), but no idea why I have the extra 451 calories which is not insignificant. I do have a big plateau in HR 7:21 - 8:08 which has flat-lined at 94 bpm which is not correct an doesn't help but it certainly wouldn't contribute 451 calories.
The activities tab states I have done 6.5km. Again that can't be correct. Outside of the activity recorded I have just wandered around the house a bit. If my Fitbit HR didn't give me HR spikes and over counting on steps I would have gone back to that for 24*7 tracking and just used the 235 for some activity tracking.

So I guess we wait. Either Garmin will get its act together and I will stick with this, or someone will come along and do a better job and I will buy something else. That's the state of the market at the moment IMO so time is running out for Garmin (and others) to get this right.
  • I am a new user of the FR235 and see the same issues.
On days when I have no activity then it looks fine.
However as soon as I have an activity, the totals become incorrect.

Today I ran 12km and then walked 3.3km.
The overall total therefore is 15.33 but GC is putting that as the Distance for Daily Steps and then adding the Activity distance again.
    Same for the calories.

  • Just in case anyone is interested I found a workaround for my issue, perhaps will be of some use to others.

Before starting an Activity, whether cycling or running, turn off Activity Tracking. The watch will now not try and count steps during the activity.
When the Activity is finished, then sync the watch to upload the activity. After syncing then turn the Activity Tracking back on.

Now when looking at the website, the Total Distance and Calories remain correct.

The only issue is that you do not get credited the steps for the activity but then reading the forum here many people do not want their activity steps and daily steps added together anyway.
For the rest of the day the Daily Steps distance and active calories continue to be incremented and the totals remain correct.

Also I did try just turning the Activity tracking back on after the Running activity without syncing first and still had errors on the website so it seems a sync is required before turning Activity Tracking back on

Here is my data on garmin connect.
It's a wee bit more accurate but still get somewhat inflated calorie burns; distance seems about right when I compare with fitbit. My fitbit also states more calories burned. I would tend to burn around 60calories burned per mile of walking and ffrom what Garmin is telling me today I have burned 320 for 2.22 miles, which is unlikely.
    See Below.

Time of Day Active Calories Duration Distance Activity Type Activity Name
7:02 475 43:25 5.51 mi Running Kilmarnock West and Crosshouse Ward Running
    Daily Steps 320 -- 2.22 mi -- --
    Totals 795 43:25 7.73 mi -- --

Should I trust the above. Data gets transferred over to My fitness pal and reduces my calorie burns slightly.

This seems like a good workaround Maxin. How has it been working for you, can we see an updated connect table of your data?

I can't believe that after 6months+, this issue is still unresolved!!!! It has never gone away and still occasionally, the calories from some workouts are doubled (eg. Counted twice - once for activity and again in the daily calories)

Garmin - you're uselss. FIX THIS DAMN PERSISTANT ISSUE (And stop breaking other things)

It's not that hard. Just sack you're entire software team and hire (+ pay adequeately) some quality engineers rather than the monkeys you have working for you now.
