Disable updating explore

I'm running 5.10 firmware and hear the other firmwares have problems such as battery life and route calculation time. Is there a way to disable the updating? Now it keeps giving me the message every time I start it.

    I am updating my Explore using Garmin Express (Windows) while the unit is connected to the PC through USB in mass storage mode. When  GE installs an update it copies a file GUPDATE.GCD to the folder ..\Garmin on the device. The only way I have found to prevent the update becoming effective is to delete the file GUPDATE.GCD from the device before you disconnect the device (safely!) from the PC.
    There is no setting in Garmin Express to disable software updates. You'll have to stay alert if a software update is available every time you sync the device data to Garmin Connect while using Garmin Express. If you are on an older version of the software be aware that this will be the case every time!

    Updates are also applied via bluetooth and garmin connect app. You will get a prompt on the device if an update is available for install

    After the prompt when an update is available do you get an option to ignore the update, or even better remove the update from your device?

    Or is the situation that when you are prompted for an update and only if you approve, the update-file will be downloaded and installed on the device?

    If a firmware update is available, it will be downloaded to your device when you sync with the garmin servers.

    When you restart your Edge, it will detect the update and ask if you want to install the new firmware. You have the option to postpone the installation, but you will be asked the question to update at every reboot of the device, unless you delete the GUPDATE.GCD update file (as you mentioned above).

    Once deleted, the update file will be downloaded again to your device when sync with garmin servers...

    I've not tried this yet but my understanding is a dummy file named "GUPDATE.GCD" is left in the /Garmin folder it effectively stops updates. Anyone care to verify? Next update I'll try this.

    It is suggested to create two dummy files - GUPDATE.GCD and GUPDATE.TMP in ..\Garmin

    I would highly doubt that. Version Check will deliver an old Version and so the Update will be downloaded
