Problems with 820 explore

I'm hoping someone can help. I bought the Edge 820 explore. It was connected to Garmin Express and said it needed to update. The update failed and now the touch screen doesn't work. I have tried reconnecting to Garmin Express, which is now showing 'add device', when I try to add it, I get to adding it and keep getting 'we are having trouble connecting to our servers, please try again'. I click try again and get the same thing. The device is pretty much useless.

Try forcing it in to mass storage mode by

    Force to Mass Storage -
Turn unit off. Hold the lap/reset button while plugging the unit into the USB. Continue holding the lap/reset for 30 seconds and the unit should go to mass storage.

I assume this post was dedicated to rache108.
    Still waiting for ideas.
  • You could try.

Hold the two buttons down at the bottom and then hold the power button down long enough to force it to restart. This should got you to the end of step 3 below.

Non-prompted Non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all FIT files including Activities, Courses, Workouts.

    • Turn device off
    • Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Press and release the power button
    • Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared
    • The unit will restart and clear non-vol

Would you know what version you were upgrading from?
If you still have the 006B255000.GCD file from the RemoteSw folder could you post it? You will need to zip it or change the file extension as I don't think you can post a GCD file.

My scenario: bought with version 230, then upgradet to some 3xx (not sure which one), then 410

I have the only 006B255000.gcd file which was downloaded from this thread:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?363143-Version-4-10-Update-Failure&highlight=006B255000
then unzipped, and uploaded to /RemoteSw/
it shows "update failed" during startup

    Same problem

I have the same problem, been on the phone to support 2 times today and they're useless, waste of time. Will have to take it back and go for another make I think.

    Software update 4.10

Me too. Only had the 820 for 10 days and have now been told to return it to Garmin to be replaced with a refurbished one. Less than impressive - you'd think they'd be rushing out a fix to avoid the embarrassment but apparently that's not in their plans at the moment. Disappointed to say the least, but have to say the advice on these threads has been really helpful - cheers guys.

    Touch screen knackered after update

After trying every fix on the forums I could find, I rang Garmin Support UK. Was surprised how quick I managed to get through to someone and after explaining the problem and being put on hold a few times they have agreed to replace it after I send it in to them. Have posted the unit off today and will see how long it takes to receive the replacement. The next query will be do I dare try to update the replacement unit if it is not on the latest firmware!!!
