820 ANT+ dropout

Get random dropouts of all ANT+ devices simultaneously. Usually all reconnect after a few seconds (with the exception of the Garmin Remote that annoyingly I have to stop and reconnect manually.) Some rides all is fine, other rides it's frequent. Today's ride I had a period of 10 mins where it dropped about half a dozen times, rest of the 90 min ride all was fine. Quite odd.

I have 820 with Vector 2 pedals, Varia rear radar, Garmin speed sensor on the hub, Garmin remote, Di2 d-fly. I have iPhone 6 connected via Bluetooth for notifications and upload. I also use the 820 on other bikes with other sets of devices and see the same issue. I believe all my firmware is up to date.

Anyone experienced anything similar? Is there a known fix?
  • Alan,
    Thanks for doing that.
Quite interesting because when I put the battery back I couldn't get the GSC10 to talk to the 820. I took the battery out again and checked it and the V was low. So I replaced the battery and the sensor is now connecting ok. So maybe it was a battery issue. Also I've just moved the GSC 10 from a different bike - perhaps the wheel magnetic wasn't well positioned. I'll make sure it is within range 5mm max I understand.

I keep the GSC 10 for when I use the bike on a Turbo - speed/distance gives the results of power & HR something to plot against.
I'll let you know how it goes next time I ride.

    Thanks again
    Nick

    Alan,
I rode today and didn't notice any dropouts on the ride. When it was happening before the power was displaying -- every now and again (I wasn't always looking so may have missed some). So either the new battery in the GSC-10 and/or ensuring the GSC-10/magnet were positioned correctly seem to have solved the issue.

    Thanks for your help
    Nick
  • On my ride on 1/6/18, my 820 quit reading my Vector 2s and my HR. I stopped and turned the unit off/on, and finished the ride without any problems. However, the file from the first part of the ride was corrupt. I had a smiliar issue a month ago while riding on the trainer.

My Garmin 820 just recently started dropping all Ant+ sensors and Bluetooth connections simultaneously. Will find/connect normally upon start up but then drop shortly into ride. Doesn’t matter if indoors on trainer or outside on road. All since recent update to new Garmin firmware 10.0. Chat w Garmin rep on 10/4/18 recommended factory reset. Completed reset and had terrible time pairing smartphone w device. Finally got paired, all sensors seemed to reconnect.....until ride today when all sensors and phone lost connectivity w 820. Had NO issues prior to firmware upgrade. Any suggestions? Rep on 10/4 really had no info. Thanks

I'm having the exact same issue as hefin and Padi1029. I'm using edge 820 with firmware 10.0. On a two hour ride I got dozens of disconnections. Really annoying.
Sensors connected were varia rtl 510, di2 dfly, stages power and vivoactive hr heartrate broadcast.
Hope Garmin support fixes this on next firmware update.
At the same time I'm getting a lot shorter battery duration with this setup. 2 hour ride drains about 40% battery from full charge.

I have also been experiencing this issue in the last couple of months. I get constant dropouts from my varia radar and power drop outs. And probably once or twice a week, the whole unit crashes, which seems to be related to the light network as it only happens when i have both lights on. It is very frustrating having these constant drop outs. They never used to be there before
  • siriso You mention drop out issues when you have both lights connected. Can you let us know what other light you are using other than the RTL510?

hey Shawn. i have the ut800 front light along with this the rtl511
  • We've got UT800s that like to cause BT/ANT+ network resets on our Edge 820 units. With UT800 on, everything resets every couple of minutes (all sensors, radar, phone connection, the works), and with the UT800 off, everything works flawlessly.

It's kind of bizarre. Opened a ticket with Garmin about this last month, just updated them with new log dumps after today's incident. Would strongly suggest chatting/calling in to get tickets opened so the PMs and leadership can see the problem and dedicate resources to fixing it.
  • rdugarmin, siriso, jjromano99, Nickmodo, lynchk, - The recent software update (11.00) contained changes to the ANT code. Could you update to this version and followup if you are still experiencing the same problem?
  • Garmin-Matthew so far the 10.26 beta fixed the majority of my drop-outs. Still having completely random radar drops, but nowhere near as absurd as before where the whole ANT network would go on holiday. Will update to 11.0 and post results this weekend-ish!
