820 ANT+ dropout

Get random dropouts of all ANT+ devices simultaneously. Usually all reconnect after a few seconds (with the exception of the Garmin Remote that annoyingly I have to stop and reconnect manually.) Some rides all is fine, other rides it's frequent. Today's ride I had a period of 10 mins where it dropped about half a dozen times, rest of the 90 min ride all was fine. Quite odd.

I have 820 with Vector 2 pedals, Varia rear radar, Garmin speed sensor on the hub, Garmin remote, Di2 d-fly. I have iPhone 6 connected via Bluetooth for notifications and upload. I also use the 820 on other bikes with other sets of devices and see the same issue. I believe all my firmware is up to date.

Anyone experienced anything similar? Is there a known fix?
  • It sounds like something is causing the ANT chip to get reset. Can you post the err_log.txt file that should be in the Garmin\Debug folder on the Edge?
  • Thanks for your help. The Garmin\Debugging folder is empty. The 820 has been on and off a few times since the ride, does the folder get cleared at any point?
  • The folder should not get cleared out. It could be that the chip reset is not getting logged.

Can you post the activity file, there might be something in there?
  • Thanks Alan. I've attached the activity file. You can see the drop outs at 33, 36 and 41 minutes in. All ANT+ devices appear to disconnect and then reconnect after a few seconds.

It is strangely intermittent. Today's ride, 3 hours, not a single drop out. Other rides it'll do it a few times, usually quite close together.
  • I’ve been getting dropouts from my Vector 2 today. Could it be the speed and cadence sensor I have just added to the Bike interfering?
  • Unlikely. Neither of those sensor should cause issues. The cadence sensor data will get ignored as the cadence from Vector takes priority.

Can you post the activity file?
  • Thanks OnlyTwo. Curious that it is reporting a position change. I know where that was in the ride and there was no position change during that period of riding, all seated.

Additionally, I also see this issue with other PM. I've a Power2Max and PowerTap C1 and I see this issue with both of those, which I don't think would be reporting the Cycling Dynamics data.

Near the beginning of the ride I lost one pedal due to the battery (I think). I'd been getting low battery warnings on a number of rides and wasn't sure if it was the cold or genuine.

I stopped and put new batteries in both pedals. The other peculiar thing was the left seemed to be reading much higher than the right although the total watts looked ok (more or less) - this discrepancy seemed to reduce later. I normally have a slight left foot predominance (53% L, 47% R)

I tried to upload but it says "Your file of 654974 bytes exceeds the limit of 81607. 2018-01-07-09-23-11.fit"

    Try this

    Thanks

  • Alan,
Did you get a chance to look at the activity file I posted?
I rode today with the battery removed from the Speed/Cadence sensor and I didn't get any dropouts. I've put the battery back for the next ride to see what happens.

  • Let me know how you get on with the sensor back in the mix. The Vector radio performance looked good in your activity. It could be that issues with the speed sensor caused a number of false auto-pauses?
