Edge 705 Front screen replacement

Hello,

I am really sorry to post here a question about Edge 705, but the forum on Edge 705 has been already archived so if Iposted there nobody would see my inquiry except those getting my thread through some web search engine.

Is there anyone around who knows how to disassemble an Edge 705 in a way that one could replace the front cover? I have a scratched one and saw that a replacement could be bought on ebay for just GBP10, but dont know whether it is possible to replace it at all.

For me 25 pieces sold are not a proof for a solution, just an evidence that quite lots of people have broken their units.

Thanks
  • Take a look at the battery replacement videos for the 705 on youtube - you should be able to get some idea how it all goes together (looks like the hardest part is going to be the multiway connector between the main board & the LCD). You could easily partially disassemble your own unit following one of those guides to see if you think it's doable for you.
  • I've had my 705 apart to change the battery and also to replace the top case. Very easy to take apart. The screen is glued into the case so I don't think it could be replaced without replacing the case. I suppose if you got creative you could cut the screen out and replace it with standard glass. I have the old case I replaced with the glass in it but it would be costly to get it to you. There's a seller on Ebay who sells 705 parts. That is where I got my replacement case.
  • Might it still be possible to get a refurbed unit from Garmin? It's been some years since they discontinued it but you might check.
  • I have an Edge 705. I'll sell it to you for $50.00

Do you live in ..... ?
  • It really easy to change the front section complete with screen you will need a small torqx screwdriver for separating the case 6 screws, and also a small cross head screwdriver to separate the motherboard from the case 2 or 3 screws

first remove the six screws and carefully pull apart the two bits there is a small ribbon cable attaching the USB port to the motherboard lift this from its connector it's a push fit next slide out the battery connector the two halves can now be in each hand

on the motherboard you will find 2 or 3 small silver cross head screws remove these, now here is the tricky part, carefully move the plastic sides away from the motherboard on each side with your fingers as there is a plastic lug on each side and with a bit of wiggle the front should come away from the motherboard bit fiddly at first but once you get hang of it

exchange the front part with your replacement and repeat the process in reverse taking care to not put finger marks on lcd screen or inside of replacement front part, wiggle motherboard back into place put one side in first

remember to push back battery connector, and pop back in USB cable before bringing two halves together finally 6 screws
  • Thanks Jim for the detailed instruction. Just to make it concrete (as we say in my native language) sure, when you speak about the front part you mean really the whole front part or just the "glass" (transparent plastic) with the surrounding black plastic. I meant the latter as it was auctioned here https://m.ebay.com/itm/Original-Garmin-Edge-705-Front-Glass-Replacement-Part-/262652247219

I have a special edition 705,which has an orange front part, I mean orange is the outer front and the normal screen part with the black inner part. My fear was how to separate these 2 front parts.

Can you please advise me how did you mean the disassemble of the front part?
  • I was referring the whole front part buttons and all
think I still have a complete front part I will look at how the middle section is removed it maybe glued in, I will report back later, off out on bike now
  • Have you had a look at it already? Or are you still rolling ? :-)
