Corrupt Fit file

Former Member
Former Member
My son did his first road race ever yesterday and was using an Edge 820. I believe that his 820 crashed right after the race and as a result his .fit file seems to be corrupt. Is there anyone that can repair it for me?

I probably wouldn't care so much about this if this wasn't his first race ever.

On a side note, his 820 seems to be crashing a lot so I suppose I'll be calling Garmin support.

    hi harrisonohio,

Your file only contains 8.69 miles worth of day - the rest of the data just isn't there.

This file contains those 8.69 miles.

    cheers

Thank you!! The "finish" shown by that file is precisely where our group normally regroups during our ride. Autopausing has never been an issue before, but it sure seems to have flaked out this time. I did download an update via Garmin Express very recently. Also had a new message displayed that I have never seen before: "Weather Alert - Winter Storm Watch", followed by the check mark that I had to acknowledge. Our area is currently under one of those (or more accurately will be under one beginning tonight), so the message content is legit and accurate. Was just very surprised that the Garmin alerted me about that upon turning it on. Oh well, got part of the ride recorded. Thanks again!

    Hi Mike,

it`s me again. the second one of thousands today :)

Battery had ninety percent. But, could it be a problem with Bluetooth? It crushed as the 820 tried to upload the saved file, like the first time a few weeks ago. The crash repeated as I tried to connect bluetooth once again. Maybe the problem was, that I first had only "BT-Edge 820" connected, now I have also "BLE-Edge 820". Is it correct, hat the 820 is recognized as two devices and could this have been the problem? Other activities since the first crash of the 820 had no problems by uploading, but I think the 820 was connected via wifi in this cases ..

Maybe this helps someone having the same problem. And maybe, Mike - could you help me with the file once again. Or is there any solution for a linux user to do this myself?

    Thanks and best regards, Chris

    Hi Folks,

My 820 crashed repeatedly yesterday whilst trying to follow a route - had to hard reset a number of times. The first section has recorded properly, then I've been straight lined for the rest of the route. I have heard good things about FFRT, but I'm a Mac user and I believe that you need MS Access for it to work.

If anyone has any time to help, I would really appreciate it, as my Strava buddies are already saying I must have caught the train for the straight line!

    Many thanks

    hi Chris,

I don't have an 820 so I am not sure what is the best settings for uploading via Bluetooth.

The Fit File Repair Tool noted that 'the recording ended abruptly and without the expected summary records.' I've been fixing a lot of files in the last two weeks with the same issue so it may possibly be something to do with a firmware update.

    Give this file a try.

    cheers
    Mike

Hello, fellows! Yesterday it happened first time to me - I've got a corrupted fit file, my edge 820 battery died at the very moment I was saving the 100km ride. At least the file has weight. I'm trying both kiesewetter and fitfilerepairtool, but there are some malfunctions. Could someone kindly check my file?)

    Hi Mike,

thank you once again. It worked perfect. Today I saved the file 30sec earlier and before arriving the wifi-area at home and it worked well. Maye this helps, otherwise I will get back to you :) And will hope for an update ...

    Best regards,

    Chris

    Hello, Mike,

It's fantastic - the fixed file uploaded with no problems! Thank you so much!

    Best regards
    Martin
  • hi Nick,

The original file is no longer available but with the info that Alan left about the end of the file being corrupted and missing the summary data then some of the ride data will have been included in the corruption.

    cheers
    Mike

    Thanks Mike,
Yes - I seem to recall I put the Garmin to sleep while i had a coffee. After restarting it seemed to turn itself off. I thought I'd perhaps turned it off. I turned it on again and it seemed to be fine. The ride was lost from the coffee stop. So there is no guarantee that It wasn't finger trouble on my part.
    Regards
    Nick
    PS
If I get the problem again I'll try and include notes of any odd behaviour (either by me or the 820). It might help others avoid problems.
