Auto Calibrate Elevation to Location? Baro Altimeter?

Here's another one:

On my Edge 800 it is possible to have the Elevation Auto Calibrate to my starting location. I saved the location, and every time I start a ride from that location I get the pop-up that says the Elevation has Auto Calibrated to that location.

I can not find the same feature on my Edge 820. As a workaround, before starting a ride I go to Navigation>Adjust Elevation and set the elevation immediately before a ride. It is a bit cumbersome, and doeasn't seem to do as good a job as the 800 in managing Elevation over the course of the ride.

The 800 has a barometric Altimeter which means it does not take all the Elevation data from GPS. This has proven very reliable.

The specs for the 820 say it also has a barometric Altimeter, but the recorded Elevation data look like all the data points come from GPS.

Does the 820 indeed have a barometric Altimeter?

TIA for any help.

    Hello,
I have been just suffering the problems you mention in this thread. I did return my Edge 820 yesterday in my shop, after getting my unit twice from the Gramin Support. I tested two different units and both of them had the altimeter issues. I ping Garmin Support mail and this is the response i have received (translated):

    ---------------------
In order to solve you issue, please follow these steps:
With the unit powered off, press START + LAP, when GARMIN appears on screen releasee the POWER button and keep pressed the other two for at least 10 seconds.

    Confirm parameters

Then just update the firmware using GarminExpress.

    PC http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express-download.html#win
    Mac http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/GarminExpress.dmg

Verify the correct functionality of you unit.

Have anyone tried this? Does it work?

  • Improvements about this issue after 5.2FW?!?

Have anyone notice diferences (for better)?
  • I have done my first trip with firmware 5.20. I think the altimeter calibration issue is solved: as soon as the 820 has a GPS fix the altitude is corrected to the right value, I assume the altitude value is taken from the pre-installed Garmin Cycle map.

This is preliminary info, based on one trip, however the altitude profile from this trip looks ok.

Saturday and Sunday trip with 5.20, altimeter value is not under sea level.
I like Strava Segment with data page.
I hope it's the first step to solve bugs

still drifting after update to 5.20

After hard reset and update to 5.20 the initial altitude is very accurate.
The displayed value is 136m whereas the true value is about 135m. So this is really accurate!

Yesterday I left the device on the terrace for about an hour and after that hour the displayed value drifted to 161m. (change in temperatur about 10 degrees Celsius)
Switched the device off and powerd it on again. The initial display value returns immediatly to 136m.
After about one more hour in the cold the displayed value drifted to 110m.

I guess that in firmware 5.20 the barometric altimeter is initialized with the correct value once it is powerd on. But there seems to be no correction during a ride. So if you have larger fluctuations in temperature or atmospheric pressure the displayed altitude will also drift.
In contrast in firmware 4.x the initial value was about 40m to low but it remains stable.

Hope that Garmin will fix the correction algorithm with the next realease.

    Cheers,
    Bernd

I have been testing the gps altitude/elevation on my 820 with the new 5.20 firmware.

And... i still have mixed feelings about the issue being solved.

Sometimes, as soon as it gets satellite connection, it shows the correct elevation near my house (137meters), or very close to it (it gave readings such as 136m, 129m, etc...). I waited some minutes for it to read but, like i said, sometimes it shows the correct reading and other times it just gives me approximated numbers.

The problem is that, other times, it gives me the exact reading of elevation it used to give me on the 5.10 firmware, which was 83 meters or even less.

If i restart the device (keep holding the power button), when it reinitiates it will sometimes show the correct elevation.

Another example, yesterday, i was at my home doing a turbo trainer workout (near my window which is near the street) and, with full satellite coverage, it gave me 83meters of elevation on garmin connect and on the gps.

So... the bottom line is... still not completely solved.
  • before 5.2 for me autocalibration was not working
but calibration to known location - almost works. for example i save 2 points - work and home, set its altitude, and every time i start recording at that points - garmin calibrates to that altitude.
it was showing correct altitude on the screen, gradient also works well.
but recorded values still was wrong. for example - my house on 95m, but in strava starting point always 10-20m below, 75-85m

    as for 5.2:
now it display and record same values, finally.
but autocalibration in unknown location - still not working.. i deleted saved point at work (10m altitude), power off garmin, and it shows me -22.
i tried left garmin for 30m on window, but nothing changed.
