Auto Calibrate Elevation to Location? Baro Altimeter?

Here's another one:

On my Edge 800 it is possible to have the Elevation Auto Calibrate to my starting location. I saved the location, and every time I start a ride from that location I get the pop-up that says the Elevation has Auto Calibrated to that location.

I can not find the same feature on my Edge 820. As a workaround, before starting a ride I go to Navigation>Adjust Elevation and set the elevation immediately before a ride. It is a bit cumbersome, and doeasn't seem to do as good a job as the 800 in managing Elevation over the course of the ride.

The 800 has a barometric Altimeter which means it does not take all the Elevation data from GPS. This has proven very reliable.

The specs for the 820 say it also has a barometric Altimeter, but the recorded Elevation data look like all the data points come from GPS.

Does the 820 indeed have a barometric Altimeter?

TIA for any help.
  • You need to create a saved location and set the elevation for that point. If you start the timer within a given radius of that saved location it will use the elevation data for that location to set the barometer.

    Thank you. I try.

    My elevation problems seem fixed

I went for a ride today and for the first time the 820 tracked elevation correctly, and it didn't seem to drift down as it did. \this was with the elevation set by my current position saved location.

The device still doesn't seem to settle on its own to the correct elevation (mine is currently showing -55m and I am at sea level) but it is an improvement.

I do believe the 4.10 update has done a good job and is heading in the right direction - thanks Garmin!

    no improvement in FW 4.10

I can't see any improvements after updating to 4.10.

The elevation of the GPS fix is still about 55m to low.

BTW: If you want to check what is the GPS based elevation without waiting the drift to stop. Just manually set the elevation to -9999. (Don't forget the "minus"). The 820 will immediatly set the elevation to the next GPS reading. Which, in my case, is about 55m lower than on my other GPS devices.

Hope they will fix GPS elevation reading in the next FW.

    Cheers,
    Bernd

How do you know that immediate elevation is from GPS rather than from the baro sensor?

dumb questions.... How do you all find out the correct elevation at specific areas?

    I use this site.

You can identify a spot on a map and it will give you the elevation.

I use Ordnance Survey GB mapping (usually Memory Map).

    calle sorge

    thanks
  • For those of you that know your elevation (e.g. you are at sea level) and don't have a saved location could you try the following.

Position yourself on a training page that shows the elevation. Note the value, then start the timer and not the value after the start. Are they same or do they change. Are either right?
