Auto Calibrate Elevation to Location? Baro Altimeter?

Here's another one:

On my Edge 800 it is possible to have the Elevation Auto Calibrate to my starting location. I saved the location, and every time I start a ride from that location I get the pop-up that says the Elevation has Auto Calibrated to that location.

I can not find the same feature on my Edge 820. As a workaround, before starting a ride I go to Navigation>Adjust Elevation and set the elevation immediately before a ride. It is a bit cumbersome, and doeasn't seem to do as good a job as the 800 in managing Elevation over the course of the ride.

The 800 has a barometric Altimeter which means it does not take all the Elevation data from GPS. This has proven very reliable.

The specs for the 820 say it also has a barometric Altimeter, but the recorded Elevation data look like all the data points come from GPS.

Does the 820 indeed have a barometric Altimeter?

TIA for any help.
  • ...Do we all get a FULL refund if this is not sorted ?????

No. It will be £40 to £80 lower.

Is anybody from Garmin reading this Forum? Or does somebody know where to officially report this bug.

Maybe we really should all send back our device for a replacement until it's fixed?
I'm waiting for one more firmware release and if this is not fixing it my device will go back as well.

@sighnbox: please let us know if your replacement new unit is better.
  • AFAIK, the only way to report an issue is to contact support either through the website on via the phone. In my experience, the first few exchanges ask a lot of questions and have you try a bunch of fruitless and irrelevant things and report back until you either give up trying or they offer to exchange the unit. Whether or not the issue ever makes it out of this loop is unknown to me.

That said, software updates often (attempt to) address issues that I've seen discussed here and likely reported via support requests. Many of the changes are not documented in the release notes, so you find out by stumbling over them. A few examples: The ferry issue, not relevant to me but I noticed it poking around after 3.2 and reported it in the thread concerning this problem. Zooming in not centered on the map but offset with each zoom level was also fixed in 3.2. I and a few others have noted a significant improvement in the touch screen function after 3.2. None of these were in the release notes.
  • Mine also reports lower altitude. In Lisbon, at sea level (in th beach) says i'm an altitude at -48m (underwater). If i set the correct altitude (0 or around 0) still dosen't fix.

Do Garmin Know can they fix it ever ????

Just phoned Evans Cycles and my replacement wont be there till the 10th or 11th as such high demand and its selling out..........WHAT I find amazing is after speaking to Garmin Tec guy who ASSURED me this is a soft wear issue and a fix is on the way (lets hope so)...so Garmin know this unit does NOT work properly ......Yet there still selling them WHY ??? .........I asked what will happen if I keep this unit six, seven, eight, nine month later and still no fix will Garmin refund me and I was told YES or replace with a working unit (Grantee is only for ONE year in the UK)

£389 a LOT of money for a unit they KNOW does NOT function correctly .......why has this not been with drawn until the problem is sorted and sold units re called ........surely this problem must have shown up in the unit testing ???? ........If it did are Garmin just selling it anyway hoping to fix the problem later............Why is a fix taking so long ?????? after all first post about this was 23rd of July TWO and a half month ago........ are they struggling ???? .....can they even fix it ??? .......will they ever manage to fix it ????? or have we all paid £389 for a DUFF unit .............This is obviously a major problem affecting what seams to be ALL units And surly under trading standards that's selling goods Not fit for purpose ............Come on Garmin is it really fair to treat your customers like this ???????................I do have to say tho I have quite a few other Garmin products and this is the first with a problem all the others are great and work well.

Every one NEEDS to phone Garmin tec up and report this and hopefully the more times it reported the more urgency will be placed upon the problem and they will act quicker in sorting it

I got a RMA from Garmin and received a replacement in 5 days, it was a waste of time as the replacement was no different.

I do have to say tho I have quite a few other Garmin products and this is the first with a problem all the others are great and work well.

Think yourself lucky, Garmin seem to make a habit of using early adopters of their products as Beta testers.
I'm sure the 820 will improve and it already does most things better than my 810, it's hopefully just a matter of time.

    Full refund

I have just spoken to trading standards and you have up to SIX month to return it to the place of purchase for a FULL refund from date of purchase if the goods are faulty and you made them aware there faulty.........Evans are replacing mine NOT Garmin as it was brought on the 4th of October ...

I LOVE the 820 and would so love to keep it BUT only if Garmin can get it working properly .......So Im happy to have it with the fault at the moment BUT with the understanding a fix for the problem is on the way

A add on ............Just spoke to Even cycles who have confirmed as long as I inform them even 8 weeks the problem is still not fixed they will FULL refund the Garmin 820 up to SIX MONTH after purchase date if Gamin do not fix this problem GREAT SERVICE EVANS CYCLES ...I'm a very happy chap (will be even happier if Garmin fix it lol)
