Auto Calibrate Elevation to Location? Baro Altimeter?

Here's another one:

On my Edge 800 it is possible to have the Elevation Auto Calibrate to my starting location. I saved the location, and every time I start a ride from that location I get the pop-up that says the Elevation has Auto Calibrated to that location.

I can not find the same feature on my Edge 820. As a workaround, before starting a ride I go to Navigation>Adjust Elevation and set the elevation immediately before a ride. It is a bit cumbersome, and doeasn't seem to do as good a job as the 800 in managing Elevation over the course of the ride.

The 800 has a barometric Altimeter which means it does not take all the Elevation data from GPS. This has proven very reliable.

The specs for the 820 say it also has a barometric Altimeter, but the recorded Elevation data look like all the data points come from GPS.

Does the 820 indeed have a barometric Altimeter?

TIA for any help.
  • auto elevation calibration has been done : i dit a test !
  • ...but the elevation slowly fall by 20 to 30 meters : No change !

I've only had time for a quick test, but I set my Home elevation to 65m pressed Start and the elevation changed from 3m to 65m and I got the message "elevation calibrated to location" or something like that (like I get with my 810). :)
I haven't had time to check if the elevation falls again, as I've been at work all night and I'm going to bed.

Firmware 3.20 - sets elevation but drifts down still

I was excited when I finally got a message this morning tells me that the elevation had been calibrated from my location - great.

And it did have it correct at 65m, but then as I rode, the elevation drifted down and down and ended up 40 to 50m below the actual elevation.

So, a step forward, but still the 820 can't show and record accurate elevation values on a ride.

    Maybe 3.30?
  • In many ways this situation is now worse, as at least before your relative elevation changes were probably correct.

Now we will have a descent that didn't actually happen at the start of our rides, and if we return to same place, it will have sunk 30-40 metres whilst we were away!

Hopefully it's a step to addressing the issue fully though.
  • I had hoped this would fix it - after all, it works fine on the 1000, so why is it so hard?

No. In my case even the relative change was 45-60m too low which is of course wrong, weird and inconsistent. To put it in perspective - I started with altitude too low for about 50m (didn't calibrate to correct one as it would drift down, so I let it be wrong just to test the total ascent data). Of course I expected that the peak point would also be 50m too low. And it was more or less. However, when I looked at my total ascent data, it was again 50m too low. It was like starting at sea level (0m), going to the peak which is 400m, however the unit showed only 350m of ascent. I know that this is not a rocket science gadget, however I've owned edge 800, 810 and 520 and those three numbers were always very close to each other. Something is still very wrong with the entire elevation, ascent part of edge 820.

    3.20 long wait
and nothing repaired - 40m, it could be a hardware problem?
I go back to my store 820, Garmin did not write what is happening

I've just sent back my second edge 820, both had elevation problems (+others, of course). I assume I will get #3 edge 820 which will probably also have elevation problem  Considering the number of people on this forum saying that their elevation is wrong, and also the fact that I haven't found a single user saying that elevation works perfectly, I assume that this is a systemic issue, not a problem that relates to only certain units. Whether this is a hardware issue or sth that can be fixed via FW upgrade is still a million dollar question :D

Please team Garmin 820, or write to fix your software?
the Garmin 820 has a manufacturing error
