Auto Calibrate Elevation to Location? Baro Altimeter?

Here's another one:

On my Edge 800 it is possible to have the Elevation Auto Calibrate to my starting location. I saved the location, and every time I start a ride from that location I get the pop-up that says the Elevation has Auto Calibrated to that location.

I can not find the same feature on my Edge 820. As a workaround, before starting a ride I go to Navigation>Adjust Elevation and set the elevation immediately before a ride. It is a bit cumbersome, and doeasn't seem to do as good a job as the 800 in managing Elevation over the course of the ride.

The 800 has a barometric Altimeter which means it does not take all the Elevation data from GPS. This has proven very reliable.

The specs for the 820 say it also has a barometric Altimeter, but the recorded Elevation data look like all the data points come from GPS.

Does the 820 indeed have a barometric Altimeter?

TIA for any help.
  • Same problem here, in Portugal. My 820 shows about a 50 m lower altitude than real. Total ascent/descent is also not correct. I usually use Strava´s correction after the upload.
I am waiting that GARMIN will fix this ASAP.

I've had my 820 replaced, it didn't fix the problem.

Did you get any info what was supposed to be wrong? If replacing the unit isn't the solution then it's obviously a software issue which makes me wonder what is taking them so long to correct the problems. I can understand software issues with new features at launch of the unit as that's new software code. But for elevation, wifi, etc - these are all several years old features.

Garmin said they'd like my previous 820 back so they could investigate the problem further, I think this was just BS.
Elevation correction from a known point works pretty well on my 810, how hard can it be too use the same software. :(

Not necessarily. I could be a hardware design or manufacturing flaw, though if it's consistent enough it should be correctable in software.

Also possible although I see people from different countries and even continents having exactly the same issue. Of course, if there is only one production location that is possible too.

I wonder if there is anyone who got the unit replaced and the new one is working ok? Or even further - is there anyone who's edge 820 is working as it should? :)

Works well on my 520 as well!

Mine is showing the exact same problems.
Garmin told me to send the unit back for investigation.

That's what they said to me, I sent it off on the Monday and the replacement arrived on the Friday (brand new in the box complete with another set of mounts) but it did cost me about £7 postage to send it back insured.
  • Same problem here in Denmark, I'm constantly riding 30 meters below the waterline
