Edge 520 powers up when plugging and unplugging

I switched from an Edge 500 to the 520. The 520 powers up when plugged in to charge it as well as when I unplug it, is this normal? It's annoying because I have to power it down when plugging it in or unplugging it. This didn't happen with the 500.

So to be clear, the unit will be off and when I unplug it, it powers up. The until will be off and when I plug it in to charge, it powers up. Thank you in advance.

  • I also find this behavior to be completely useless and aggravating every time I charge it and remove it from the charger. I contacted Garmin and they said this is not something that can be changed and is somehow a design feature. I would not have upgraded from my previous device if I had know this was an issue, I would have simply repaired my old device. Every person I know and ride with that owns a newer Edge complains about the same issue. It appears the above statement is correct, Garmin does not care or respond to their users, they simply do what they want and too bad if you don't like it. Please continue to request this be changed on all Edge devices or I will be looking for an alternative device for my next upgrade. #Wahoo
  • +1 on the sentiments expressed here and I agree that this "feature" makes absolutely ZERO sense, this is a real head-scratcher as to what was Garmin thinking :-(

It does have some use to restart the Edge520 (that i have)
It moves the files from the [NewFiles] directory to my training course directory and converts them

BUt of course you can do that later when you restart the GArmin but does take a few extra minutes

Annoying as heck! Firmware update please.
  • This is another major usability fail of Garmin. It's the same with Garmin Edge 520, Garmin Edge 520 Plus and Garmin 530 (amongst others, but these are the devices I checked myself).

When the device is switched off, and you connect it to USB for charging the battery, the device will turn on and stay on. You want to fuel power into the battery, and the device switches ON! Garmin, hello?

But that's not all! The same will happen when you disconnect the power cable!

    This is so annoying, really.

  • This is so annoying. Like others said, makes it take longer to charge. But also, nothing like coming in from an early ride while the family is asleep, and throwing my Edge on the charger without thinking and having it make all that noise as it powers up.

I've known about this issue since I got my 520 4 years ago.  Unbelievable that Garmin can't change a line of code and fix this.

I just headed out on a ride and had my computer die a block from home.  Turns out when I charged it  and unplugged it a couple of days ago, I forgot to turn it back off.  Now I have no usable computer/HRM.  Nice going Garmin.  Add that to the recent Connect fiasco and I cant wait for this POS to die so I can buy a Wahoo.

  • This is super annoying for me because I have Ant+ lights in an attempt to use these lights to their fullest I have them linked to the 520 plus to turn on when the unit turns on, well guess who has to sit there and wait every stinking time I plug in my edge to power back down with strobe lights like I'm in a disco?  Same for when I'm unplugging my bike to go load it up for a ride, lights decide "It's PARTY TIME!" because the Edge is turning itself back on...
