Hi had the same problem, when I went to turn the unit on the screen flashed the power sign and then seemed to lock on a black screen, cured it by doing the following:-
To perform a master reset:
1.Power device off
2.Press and hold Lap and Start/Stop
3.Power device on while still holding both buttons
4.Continue holding buttons when Garmin "splash" screen appears
5.Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears

That helped but I sure didn't like having to reset everything.
I just created an activity for my touring bike a couple of days ago. I wonder if that caused the problem?
I've had my 520 for a couple of months now and this was the first problem with it.
In case someone stumbles across this thread, I'll add what worked for me. Ensure that your battery charge is pretty full. Second, and more important, ensure that you have a high quality cord, not just any that's laying around. Preferably, use the cord that came with the Garmin. Although a cheaper cord may provide charge, it won't provide storage mode.
