Edge 520 and text alerts

Does anyone know if the 520 can display an actual text message that you are receiving or does it just let you know that you have received one. My 520 lets me know that I have received a message but it doesn't show me the actual message.

On my Fenix is does show me the actual message which is great.

Thanks for the help!

    Device Settings

Hello Dawn, Garmin, I have an Iphone 6 plus and when I open up Garmin connect on my phone I see that my Garmin 520 is connected but after I click setting there is no "smart notifications"

When my phone is connected to my 920 or Epix I get notifications on my watches but cant get them to work on my 520. Hoping you can help.

    Thank you,
    Paul

I have a ticket open with Garmin Support and some of this may assist us...The first part is a given...the second part head us into the "hey that fixed it" territory.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I am happy to further assist you today.
Please check on your Garmin Connect Mobile app and make sure that the notifications you want to see are enabled.
    1. Open the Garmin Connect Mobile app
    2. Touch the Menu (3 horizontal bars)
    3. Touch Settings
    4. Touch Smart Notifications
On this screen, make sure that you have each notification that you want to get enabled here, if it is not enabled, it will be white/light colored, if enabled, it should be colored (mine is green).

You may also want to check the settings on your phone. When your compatible Garmin device is paired with a smartphone, text messages can be viewed directly on the device. The level of message detail will be based on the smartphone or message app settings. If you are not able to view the full text message, you will need to adjust the settings.

With the variety of smartphones, messaging applications and operating systems, the procedure for changing this setting is not standard. The following steps are general only, for specific instructions for your smartphone, please consult your owner's manual, phone manufacturer or carrier:
    Messaging application settings:

    1. Open your messaging application
    2. Select the menu
    3. Select Settings
    4. Select Notifications (some phones skip this step)
    5. Locate and enable Preview or Preview message
    6. Enable Preview
    Phone settings:
    1. Go to phone settings
    2. Locate notification settings (sometimes Sound & Notifications)
    3. Locate Notifications heading
    4. Check the Device Lock settings, they may be set to show, hide etc.
A reminder that these are general instructions, your phone setup may vary depending on your messaging, and operating system. Please feel free to contact Customer Support and we will try to assist you.

After two weeks, I figured out why this was not working for me..

My Garmin Connect app does not have any 'Notification' setting in 'Connect app >Settings' or 'Connect app > Devices > 520' FYI.. I am translating from Chinese, so the exact English setting names within the app may differ, but I think you get the idea. Connect app > Devices > 520 --- Anyway, there is a setting for automatic upload. There is one for weather that when turned on will open a second weather related one for weather alerts. Again, there is nothing for enabling 'notifications'.

I had already paired my 520 with my phone. If I looked at the iPhone BT settings, I would see 'BT_Edge 520'. This worked fine for uploads and LiveTrack, but I was not getting any notifications. On the 520 Bluetooth screen, I noticed a 'Pair Bluetooth Smart Device'. I do not think you have this option until after you have paired the phone already. Perhaps, the first pairing allows Garmin to determine if you have a BT Smart device. Also, the pairing mechanism may have and probably changed with newer BT protocol. Anyway, I tried that option and paired it to my phone yet again. Now, on my iPhone in the BT settings, I see both 'BT_Edge 520' and 'BLE_Edge 520'.

Quick test.. I left Connect App open and locked the screen. Next, I had someone send me an SMS or iMessage. Success! Notification popped up on bottom of 520 saying 'Message From:' with the contact name underneath. On the 520 Status screen under the 'Bluetooth Connected' option, there was now a 'Notifications' option, within which was the actual message. I tested again with WhatsApp, but that did not work. I am not sure if it is supposed to work with other messaging apps, email, etc..

    Possibly FIX for iPhone Users

I stumbled across this thread today AFTER fixing my dads text notification problem with his new 520. We both have iPhone 6, both have new 520's, both were receiving call notifications. He was NOT getting texts on the 520. I dug around for a second, then realized it probably syncs up with the iPhones notification center API. I had helped him reduce the number of notifications a few weeks ago so it popped in my head. Well, I got his iPhone, went to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Show items in notification menu -> Set to 5 recent items. We had set his to NONE, so essentially ZERO texts notifications would sit in his slide down alert center. This is what your Garmin 520 will sync to!!!

Make sure you've got messages and phone notifications ON and showing in this setting pane. I'm sure there's a few out there who haven't found this fix and I hope this helps! Although I will be turning the feature off soon because I have very substantial battery drain from it. Good luck!

this worked for me, pair phone twice..second time to BLE_Edge 520

    This worked of me thanks
  • having issues with this as well. I'm connected (and have forgotten and reconnected) to BTE_Edge_520 and BT_Edge_520. have opened the garmin connect, forgotten the devices, reconnected them and still nothing shows up when I get a text on my phone.

I have a iPhone 6 Plus and I just cannot get notification window to show up on my Garmin Edge 520. Anyone else have a similar configuration to me?

I have the iphone 6 and cannot get text/phone notifications to appear on my 520 either.
  • Cannot access txt messages if I have more than 1

I was able to get the units paired and the notification on the bottom of the screen when a call or a txt arrives, however, when I navigate to "Missed calls and texts" to read txt messages, if I have only one txt message, the contents will display, if I have 2 or more unread txt messages, the screen shows the number of txt messages i.e. "3 new messages" and I cannot select or display these. The only way to clear is to power cycle the unit which appears to clear all the txt messages.

Similarly, When I rcv a call, I get the incoming call notification, however, when I navigate to "missed calls and texts" the screen shows the very first incoming call I rcvd since the last power cycle. I can't select or delete it. There is no records of any subsequent calls received.

These issues appear to be on the 520 side. FWIW, I have a Galaxy S5.

It is not uncommon with texting that there is a burst of txts then silence. If I can't get to the first one I received, this feature is totally worthless.

How do I delete phone and txt messages?

It would be nice that when an incoming message or call notification appears on the screen that it remain until the back button is pressed (just like every other notification that pops up).

Has anyone seen and/or found a solution to this?

    Dear Garmin,
When will this seamingless simple to implement feature be fixed????

    I have a Galaxy S5 as well.

I see the same behavior with the text notifications, sorta. Let me explain:

If I have two texts - each from different senders - I can select them both individually to read (i.e. 1 text from my wife, 1 from my mistress :p (j/k! haha), I can read them. If both texts are from the same person however, the 520 tells me that I have two texts from that person, but I cannot select any further to read the individual texts.

"How do I delete phone and txt messages?": If you read the messages on your phone (mark them as read) then the phone will (at least the S5 will), tell the 520 and they will disappear from the notifications. Other than that, I haven't found a way to delete them after they are read on the 520.

Notifications Wishlist (off the top of my head, feel free to add to it):

    1. It would be nice to be able to just kill notifications on the 520, rather than have them hang around on the page until you manage to pull out your phone and read them again.
    2. Also would be nice to have an option to enable a little icon somewhere on the training pages (or a border perhaps, like the yellow "paused" border?) to tell you that there are notifications waiting for review.
    3. Whatsapp support

    Cheers,

    Thanks PilotGuy,

I did have multiple txts from one number and I replicated what you described.

I also noticed while I received these txts and calls yesterday, the screen on the Garmin said "Today".

Still, the feature is horribly broken and useless. Hopefully Garmin is listening.
  • Further observation of txt meesage behavior.

PilotGuy 74 above describes the behavior of not being able to read txt messages if more than one were received from the same sender. Today I noticed a different behavior. I received a txt that was on a thread that had multiple recipients. I was able to read the contents of the message on my 520. Shortly there after, I received 3 more txts from other senders, but on the same conversation (or thread). My 520 now said "4 Messages recieved" and I couldn't read them.

So it appears that the limitation is not on the same sender but on the same thread.

I hope Garmin can fix this, as I find it quite disappointing that this feature is a bad as it is.
