Do you use the tether?

I just got my 520 and will probably use the out front mount. I noticed a tether in the box. Do you use the tether? Does the 520 frequently pop out of the mount making the tether necessary?

I use mine to prevent a quick theft. I've never had my 520 come off in a wreck, though.
  • I never used the tether until I lost mine, not biking, but between the time I got back to the trailhead and left. I had sat the unit on the truck bumper and drove off. I use the tether to keep the unit handy without sitting it down. I have taken spills where the mount was twisted giving pause as to whether the phone could be twisted off and lost.

Now, I use the tether and when I take it off the bike, I clip it to my pack. Now, it's just habit to tether it to any bike I ride.

    It's just peace of mind.

I've only used Edges for 3-4 years, maybe 15,000 miles or so, first an Edge 500, and now the 520. Mostly XC mountain biking and road, but also A-line at Whistler and the like. I've never used the lanyard. I had the 500 come off once in a crash that was hard enough to take my tire off the rim. The tabs on my Barfly mount broke in that case. I picked up the Garmin and put it in my jersey pocket, and grabbed the mount off my spare bike for the next lap when I came through the pits (It was an 18 hour race.) I couldn't imagine messing with the lanyard every time I switch between my road and mountain bike, or when I use it for running.

It's really no hassle at all. Just loop the tether around the stem and put the 520 through the loop before clicking it into the mount. Takes about 10 seconds.

  • A friend of mine lost his new 520 (a few weeks old). It was on one minute, and then he hit a large hole and had to repair a puncture. He got back on bike and it was gone. We went back and looked for it but could not find it. I suspect it was either stolen by someone in the riding bunch while repairing the puncture (unlikely as we know most of them well), or he did not fit it properly in the first place. I have seen people not seat it properly in a mount before so the tabs were above the lock ring. Either way, with the tether he would probably not have lost it.

While pushing a button on the side of my 520 my Edge rotated out of the mount, bounced off the road and flew into the bushes never to be seen again. Two hours looking and I couldn't find it. I've had an Edge for four years and always thought it was very secure. I'll be using the tether on the replacement!
  • Started using mine every ride since about three months ago - only takes seconds to loop around the bars.
  • I would love to.  I have a 830, where do you attach it, can't find anything in the manual that shows that.

  • Ah found the little hole at the bottom of the charging recess, all good Slight smile
