Do you use the tether?

I just got my 520 and will probably use the out front mount. I noticed a tether in the box. Do you use the tether? Does the 520 frequently pop out of the mount making the tether necessary?

Absolutely. Mine has never popped out but I'd hate to lose a £200 GPS unit because I didn't attach a simple lanyard to it. Gives peace of mind if nothing else.
  • No. It has never come out during Road riding (inc. a couple crashes)... But I might if I was doing "serious" mountain biking..

I use it as well. On my fixie, I have the weaker mount, and I loop the teather around the top tube of the bike. (No room on handlebars) I figure this setup (the rubber bands) is the more likely to break at random, though it hasn't happened. On the road bike with out front mount, I sometimes loop it around the front reflector, all as a 'just in case'
  • Never thought of using it for this purpose. I do have it attached, and it makes it easier to carry around when you stop somewhere and need to take the Garmin with you.

    yes, every ride
  • mine popped off once whilst doing 27 mph in the chain gang. Luckily we were by pavement and I managed to find it! Didn't catch back up with the chain gang though;)
  • No it has not popped out, not even when I got turned into a flying toy by a car last year. I use the included out front Garmin mount.

For those who say it has popped out, are you mountain biking or road biking? I just double checked the snugness/tightness of my 520 in the mount and I cannot see how the 520 would 'pop out' on the road unless you physically hit the 520 itself.

And no.. I do not use the tether.
  • In 2013 I hit a motorcyclist who took a u turn without looking. Hit at about 30kmph, and the Garmin flew off. It was about 20 feet ahead of the bike, about where I was too. Mount tabs broke [the 500, and I bout a mount and glued it on].

The bike? Every tube was broken, so not what I would call an everyday situation.
  • I use mine mainly while riding marathons, xc but with some pretty rough trails.
It never detached but I use the tether every single time.

Also I don't leave my bike unattended but if by any reason I do, it also gets more difficult for someone to steal the edge (not very significant but...).
  • Thanks for all the responses. Just to be on the safe side I am going to use the tether.
