cluttered maps

I am using OSM maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl (openfietsmap lite).
Works flawlessly, but there aren't any options to further configure the map (neither in this tool nor on the edge). My problem is that the map is very cluttered and this makes it very hard to read while on the bike. I don't need this level of detail for road cycling (all these POIs, smallest forest paths etc.).
What is the easiest way to change these settings? I already figured out that there are templates (typ-files) and there are some websites dedicated to this topic, but the whole process seems quite time-consuming. Figuring out the process, fiddling around with different tools, finding the correct map elements etc.

Any ideas?
  • I have the same issue. Has anybody figured out how to reduce the content in a Openstreet Map prior to loading it on the 520?
I only need the roads to show on the map, not any of the other information.
  • 5 year old question so probably no-one interested in an answer but if you go to bbbike.org and generate and download a map with Garmin On-Road format it removes much of the clutter, ( land cover and street names ) and as a result the map file is also much smaller, (10% of standard OSM of the same area), so you can create a map covering a larger area, works well on the 520

https://extract.bbbike.org (Latin / ANSI rather than UTF as some Garmins don't like UTF)
