Edge 520 software version 3.0 available but ...

Version 3.0 is shown available on the Garmin website but Garmin Express does not think there is any update. What gives?

  • I plugged mine in yesterday and am fairly certain Garmin Express said I was up to date with 3.0 but the 520 still indicates 2.3.

I'll wait a few days and see if it gets updated automatically. Can it get the updates wirelessly?

  • The GE interface can be a little confusing. Because it automatically downloads any updates to your device what it is really showing is the latest available update as it assumes that the update it has just downloaded will install correctly. For some reason it does not sound like it did.

You can manually install the update by copying the Edge520_300.gcd file from this location in to the Garmin folder on the Edge and then renaming the file to gupdate.gcd. The Edge should then apply the update after you disconnect it from the PC.

Anybody can confirm than grade calculation (% of ascend) is improved comparing with previous firmware version (2.3)?? Note than with 2.3 version this calculation has a noticeable delay when shows the instant grade.

    Thanks in advance.

No noticeable change in the handling of altitude with this update, the lag is still obviously there and way behind the 500 (I'm still riding with both units for comparisons) consequently the gradient calculations are still lagging too.

I have yet to complete a circular ride where the 520 reports anything close to the same ascent and descent figures - the descent is always far less than the ascent - which again points to slow altitude calculations on the 520. The 500 is usually within a couple of metres which is acceptable allowing for air pressure changes.

Oh well, back to waiting for the next update...
  • Hi!

    I live in Europe.
    I bought 520 Taiwan(ebay). I can not use firmware 3.0(I use firmware 2.60). Why?
    Is there any solution?

    Thanks!
  • Disappointingly, the version 3.0 does not fix the connectivity issue with the Wahoo Tickr HRM. It is still taking a very long time to do the initial pairing and even when paired, it's only connecting, very briefly, on rare occasions.

Also the version 3.0 firmware does not resolve the pairing issue of BLE_Edge_520 (for call/text notification) with iPhone 6s.

Found out from Wahoo Fitness that the Wahoo TICKR HRM is not compatible with the Edge 520 and 1000 because they are using different ANT+ protocol. The Wahoo TICKR Run and TICKR X are compatible though.

Guys, not sure the above is correct. I've been using a TICKR (standard - not run or x) from day 1 with the 520 without any issues. I have two TICKR HR monitors, in fact... Have yet to try with the 3.0 firmware - I seriously hope they didn't screw it up!

I tried replying but it doesn't seem to be showing up. Anyway, I'm not sure the above is correct. I have two Wahoo TICKR (standard, not Run or X) which have worked flawlessly with my 520 from day 1.

I haven't tried the 3.0 software yet... fingers crossed that it won't mess up my HRMs.

Same here, and it still works OK with 3.0

This post may seem out of place on this forum but I want to say THANKS! There's not much positivity in most of these posts., Update went automatically no problem, I then deleted the default profiles that reinstalled themselves to leave me with my original custom ones, and everything seems to be working fine - elevation profile, courses, turn points & warnings, phone messages. Hope i'm not in the minority.

Yep! Same here. All the nagging issues I had seem to be addressed. Especially the BT syncing with my iPhone 6. Everything connects and communicates as advertised!

The only problem I've found is that now riders know when one of my KOMs are coming up. I've lost TWO already! Really?!! Sheesh... guess I just have to train harder and get them back! LOL

    Thanks, Garmin!

The regional variants of the Edge have their own product numbers and dedicated software. You cannot convert a unit from one region to another. These units are not really meant to be sold outside of that region as they have been enhanced/modified for that region, but some sellers will sell outside of the targeted region. Typically features released in the non-regional model get pulled in to the regional builds at a later date, but I don't know how quickly that will be.
