Speed Sensor 2 firmware update keeps failing

It appears my Edge 1030 keeps trying to update my Speed Sensor 2 from FW ver 2.3 to 4.0. Every time it returns "Communication Failure" before it finishes. I have tried spinning the wheel to keep the sensor active and still no luck. Battery is fine and am getting no drop outs on rides.

Ideas on how to complete the update welcome. With that said, not sure exactly if I really need the update (if it ain't broke ...). Can't find release notes anywhere on 4.0 to see if it's needed. If I can't get it to work, is there a way I can just skip it and stop my Edge from nagging me about it?

Mine did that too several times, but it finally completed, after it prompted me to update after a ride. I just let it spin and checked on it later and it was updated. I think I have another one on a different bike that hasn't yet been updated. I should wake it up and see what happens.

I also wonder what's new about FW 4.0.

Ok, this is what worked (keeping in mind the real solution may be just keep trying and eventually anything will work).

1) Took sensor off bike 2) Turned BT off on my phone so GC wouldn't interfere 3) Turned on Edge 1030 4) Twiddled sensor in my fingers until it connected 5) Went into sensor settings on the Edge and started update 6) Continued twiddling until update completed (about 1-2 minutes)

ETA: Other details ... made sure no other sensors were connected and kept the Edge and Speed Sensor 2 right next to each other.

Thank you for this, it’s been driving me nuts for months trying to get the sensor to connect and update. I have an Edge 1030 all the other sensors updated without issue, just the Speed Sensor 2 that remained belligerent!

I did exactly what cyclenut73. Finally, the steps worked for me after 30mins twiddling the sensor and numerous failures for last couple weeks, deeply appreciated.

Tips: remember to stay close to your wireless router.

I hope Garmin can improve on this terrible technical experience

Mine must have failed a dozen times, and I tried all of the tricks (Bluetooth off and on, kept spinning wheel, etc.) I finally took the battery out of the sensor, let it sit for maybe a minute, reinstalled and VOILA, 4.0!
