Speed Sensor 2 firmware update keeps failing

It appears my Edge 1030 keeps trying to update my Speed Sensor 2 from FW ver 2.3 to 4.0.  Every time it returns "Communication Failure" before it finishes.  I have tried spinning the wheel to keep the sensor active and still no luck.  Battery is fine and am getting no drop outs on rides.

Ideas on how to complete the update welcome.  With that said, not sure exactly if I really need the update (if it ain't broke ...).  Can't find release notes anywhere on 4.0 to see if it's needed.  If I can't get it to work, is there a way I can just skip it and stop my Edge from nagging me about it?

  • You now have the option to update via GCM if you are still experience a problem updating with your Edge.

  • Your solution worked just fine for me. Thanks!

  • I wanted to follow up since I got another speed sensor and it kept failing. I took the battery out, let it sit for a minute, reinstalled and did the update and it worked first time.

Same procedure, keep the sensor right next to the Edge and keep moving it. Worked twice for me.

  • Thank you for this!  Seems the disabling BT did the trick!

  • I did the same thing except didn't have to keep moving it.  I did have to move it after the update finished and the sensor reset.  Seems the trick was to just remove the battery to reset the device first.

  • After weeks of getting the software update message only to have the connection fail.  I realized all I had to do was keep the wheel turning while the update occurred.

  • I’ve kept the wheel moving. I’ve taken the battery out and waited before replacing.  No matter what, this debacle of an update fails, usually in the 70-80% range of progress.  GARMIN, HOW DO YOU PUT OUT SUCH CRAPPY STUFF??  This issue has been in the forums for a long long time, AND IT STILL SUCKS.  I’m going with the other folks that have mentioned switching to Wahoo.  And if Apple ever gets serious about this market, issues like this will devastate the Garmin customer base.  FIX YOUR CRAPPY STUFF!  GET A NEW QA TEAM!  Grrrrrrrrrr!

  • I totally get your frustration, every time I have to update I have to take sensor off the wheel and flip it around and around on a work surface so that it triggers connection and stays connected during the software update process.  This is dreadfully poor design - why can’t it update over the air when actually on the bike !  I use Garmin because of their leading sat nav capabilities, but they’re being overtaken by companies like Apple.  This is brand damaging in terms of credibility and trust IMO.

  • Success for me has been to turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on my phone, then ride the bike in circles in my driveway until the update completes.  The Bluetooth (and or Wi-Fi) on the phone seems to interfere with the transfer of the update from the 530 to speed sensor.  I have found this to be true with three different speed sensors.  Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone has been 100% successful for me, although it might have taken two tries on one occasion.
