How to load a *.img map?

I downloaded a map (from extract.bbBike.org) as a gmapsupp.img file.  Their instructions say to copy the file to the gps device's sd card under the Garmin directory, i.e. Garmin\gmapsupp.img.  I did that, but my Edge 1030 doesn't recognize it.  I've successfully done the same thing with an earlier Garmin gps, so I'm guessing this mode of transfer doesn't work with the 1030.  Is there some other way of installing a *.img map on the 1030?

  • P.S. When I open BaseCamp with the 1030 connected, it shows the map under the 1030 both under Internal Storage and under Memory Card (I put the .img file both places), and I can view the map.  However when I open "Install maps on Edge 1030" the map is not listed.  And, as I said, it is not listed on the 1030.

  • Have you tried with the img file in the garmin folder on the device only & not on the SD card?

  • Thanks for the suggestion.  The changes listed are

    • Fix crashes drawing third party maps
    • Fix issue unlocking maps from SD card

They are similar but not identical to my problem.  The device doesn't crash, it just doesn't show the map; and I don't think anything needs to be "unlocked".

I hesitate to go to a beta version.

  • Yes, I've tried it several ways: internal, sd card, both.  Nothing works.  I wonder if others with Edge 1030s are having the same problem, or whether it's just my own particular setup.

  • I'm not having any issues with 3rd party maps.

When you go to the maps in the navigation settings for the activity profile, what maps do you have listed?

  • I am not familiar with the 1030 but the problem could be one of 2 issues that I have had on my cheaper devices (520 & 530)

BBBike.org offers Garmin maps (.img) in two different formats, "Latin1" & "UTF-8", the UTF ones have not worked on my devices, this is a long standing Garmin issue, no error message but just does not show in the list of maps while the same map in "Latin1" works.

Also some BBBike formats (specifically "On-Road" but maybe others) previously reused the same map segment ID starting number for multiple extracts which caused the second map to not appear in the map list on the device even though both were in the Garmin directory. You can use a utility like Javawa Device Manager (perhaps Basecamp too?) to show you duplicated segment IDs. I have reported this issue and they reset the starting ID for me but the site may still reuse IDs for multiple extracts.

As always we are indebted to the various extract sites and should remember to "donate" if we find their service is of value to us.

  • L. Rouge - thanks, you nailed it!  The map has to be downloaded in Latin1 format, not UTF-8.  I didn't know which to use and arbitrarily picked UTF-8.  Who would have thought that that would have been the source of the problem?  I know I wouldn't!

  • As you'll see below, the UTF-8 format was the cause of the problem - weird!  Just for information, the maps I have listed are:

    AMR Standard Basemap, NR                                             Enabled

Garmin Cycle Map Amer, North 2021.10                          Enabled

    LassenNp2 opentopo/latin1 BBBike.org 15-Jul-202     Enabled - This is the map I got working

Garmin DEM Map North America 2020.10                       Disabled (Don't know what this is)

Garmin Geocode Map North America 2021.10                Disabled

Garmin Cycle Map Amer, Central 2021.10                        Disabled

US Pacific OSM Topo                                                             Enabled - I got this from gmaptool.eu (similar to the BBBike map but includes contour lines)

  • Great stuff, glad you got to the bottom of it. Nice one @L.Rouge
