Screen changing randomly when riding outside in wet conditions.

On my last two outdoor rides, when the screen gets wet, it starts to randomly change to other pages or get stuck. This is beginning to ruin my rides and not what I would expect from an expensive piece of kit! Any thoughts of how to fix would be really appreciated, thanks.

  • I'll have to try the shower test. I recall riding in fairly heavy rain with the screen lock activated and I had no problems with the screen. This was about a year ago. Perhaps there has been a change in the newer firmware.

  • how can these new models be so ***. all my older Edge units worked in the rain. Worked with gloves. Worked with sweat. Despite specs and advertising the current units can"t cope with a drip of sweat. Locking the screen is a sad work around that is not effective and was never required on older units. After 10 years of Edge I'm going shopping elsewhere.

  • I have two solutions to this. First when the screen is wet it is normal it registers touches so you need to turn the touch screen off, easy just press Power it will enable screen lock. In that mode the touch screen if off

If you often ride in the rain get a Garmin Edge Remote that will provide you buttons to control the screens.

So in the rain I lock the screen and use the remote to change screens. The remote is also very useful when riding with thick gloves.

  • These methods are not solutions they are work around. Total useless if you need to zoom/ pan maps while riding. Older models had no issue in the rain or when screen covered in sweat. My only cause for screaming on yesterday’s ride was when i needed to look at something on the map, the screen covered in sweat, No matter how much i tried to wipe it dry with my hand or jersey the edge was just randomly flicking through screens and completely unresponsive to input from finger. A faulty 1030 unit...... no, my partners 830 does exactly the same thing. I could ride all day in the rain and still have no issue with my 810. These newer models are completely unsuited to heavy navigation usage. Pootling around collecting power data and displaying txt messages etc for your Strava upload is all very cute but Garmin should have concentrated on insuring basic functionality first particularly when they claim the touch screens work in the wet and with gloves.

  • Hi,

same issues (and frustration) here. You wrote: After 10 years of Edge I'm going shopping elsewhere.

What’s your choice? Or your acceptable solution/workaround for this wetscreen-issue?

    thanks,

  • Karoo 2 if you can live with the battery life being shorter

higher end Wahoo if you need the long battery life

  • Bedankt Rik

These products have certain benefits for sure. Nevertheless, and again, to me Garmin has, considering everything I find relevant, the 'best' of all the ' worse devices'  to choose from.

  • I'm getting the exact same when there's any drop of rain/sweat/mud/snot (yuck).  I have the screen locked and it goes ballistic anyway.  (I don't think it done it when the unit was new). The only thing I've found is to just let it settle a bit and if I get the chance shut it down or put it to sleep and give the screen a good wipe.  If I try to touch it before it has settled down it goes even more ballistic :-/

  • I was considering a garmin device because of furtration from my iPhone becooming not usable because i swet A LOT.

Carefully read all comments . What is the botton line- when recording the lock does not work and when lock you are not able to zoom?

    Did anyone try?

  • I don't know if  you are familiar with data fields (Speed or power etc) they are unlocked as default and a touch of the screen can change a field, ie speed becomes right power (no good to you when you haven't got a powermeter). Locking the screen prevents that.

However you also have data pages and map pages (only one page can be displayed) and whilst the fields on each page are locked you can still swap between a data page and a map page. Fine in theory but it often goes wrong in the wet (rain or sweat).

To zoom or pan the map page you need to unlock the Garmin (tap the power button).

    I've never tried rainx myself.
