Edge 800 vs 1030 while walking

I used both my Edge 800 and my 1030 for my walk today.  The 800 showed 1.01 mile while the 1030 showed only 0.34 miles.  Both are set to smart recording and auto pause off.  The sum of distance in the fit files show 5376 ft for the 800 and 5392 ft for the 1300.   Very odd that an old 800 works fine while the  new, only a month old 1030 is in err.

  • Would you be okay sharing the .fit file here in the forums? Also, what recording settings/auto pause settings were you using?

In short, this is not the intended use for this device, but we can…

  • The fact that the 1030 is calculating "distance" incorrectly while calculating "GPS distance" correctly makes me wonder how accurate the 1030 is at "bike speed".…

  • No idea...I use a hub. mounted speed sensor...learned that trick years ago, have never depended on GPS...because (and the Garmin folks will push back I am sure) civilian GPS applications are not very accurate. They're accurate enough to know where you are, but the receiver and chipsets are rarely good enough to get accurate speeds, but mil spec stuff would be cost prohibitive, so....

  • I am 99.99% sure that it does not matter what you have under routing /navigation

That is only for navigation calculation , more than this , I think that is not even the logic from the bike computers but from car navigation, Garmin should be dump this approach

    Just a small sidenote:
The column "GPS Distance" is not part of the activity fitfile (not calculated by the Edge), but was calculated by the software "fitfile repairtool", the software I used to export the Excel file. But these values (and the track) show that GPS was recorded properly.

  • I I just detected this very valuable discussion. McInner sums it up perfect:

It is no question of autopause. It is simply an Edge 1030 issue which can only be answered by Garmin!

@Garmin-Blake from Garmin developers: may I ask you or one of your colleague if you analyzed this issue like offered by you about a year ago and did you find a solution which you can fix within one of the future firmware updates at least for the Edge 1030 PLUS?

Thanks a lot, will help many Edge 1030 PLUS users around the world.
