Edge 800 vs 1030 while walking

I used both my Edge 800 and my 1030 for my walk today.  The 800 showed 1.01 mile while the 1030 showed only 0.34 miles.  Both are set to smart recording and auto pause off.  The sum of distance in the fit files show 5376 ft for the 800 and 5392 ft for the 1300.   Very odd that an old 800 works fine while the  new, only a month old 1030 is in err.

  • Would you be okay sharing the .fit file here in the forums? Also, what recording settings/auto pause settings were you using?

In short, this is not the intended use for this device, but we can…

  • The fact that the 1030 is calculating "distance" incorrectly while calculating "GPS distance" correctly makes me wonder how accurate the 1030 is at "bike speed".…

  • It might be like this:

-Edge 1030 records GPS data - in your case it does it well
-Edge 1030 records speed data calculated by GPS data - in your case speed data might be not precise enough to calculate the correct distance, because speed is too low, and maybe there are not enough decimal places used for this calculation.

See enclosed Excel file of your fit file:
There is a column "Distance" - false values (apparently calculated by speed)
There is a column "GPS Distance" - correct values (calculated by GPS recording)

Not relevant here, but: why are there no elevation data?

    EDIT:
...but a closer look to the Excel sheet shows discrepancies to my thesis:
"Distance" does not increase for a long time at the beginning of the activity although there are speed values of about 2,5 km/h. Always remains at a distance of 0.00096000 km whereas the GPS Distance increases correctly...

  • The GPS signal is strong. I connect with Garmin connect every day. The firmware is 11.0.  The 1300 is mounted on the top of my cane.  I walk in a suburban neighborhood on the street with no obstructions to the GPS.

Since the data in the. Fit file is correct and is the same as the Garmin 800, why does the1300 show an incorrect distance while the 800 is correct?

  • It seems that there is a a minimum speed, like having auto pause=on, even when it is turned off.  Again, why is the 800 correct while the1300 is incorrect?

  • What is your auto pause custom speed value set to

each Garmin device has a minimum threshold speed value where auto pause kicks in or out, maybe set auto pause on and set a very low custom speed value

  • Autopause is not the culprit. When autopause kicks in, the recording stops - there would also be no more GPS recording anymore.

  • Again, why is the 800 correct while the1300 is incorrect?

Because Edge 1030 calculates "Distance" not correctly (Under your circumstances - see my Excel shet 1030)
and because Edge 800 calculates "Distance" correctly!

    See Excel sheet 830:

    G800-2020-11-19-12-32-11.xlsx

It is no question of autopause. It is simply an Edge 1030 issue which can only be answered by Garmin!

  • Thanks, I sounds like another bug that may be fixed in the future.  For now I will use my800 for walking.

  • Have you considered using your phone? Where is the final resting place for this data? There are a number of apps you could use to record your activities, and then have the option to move the data to Strava, Garmin, etc. I realize it is an extra step, but as you've been told, this is not the ideal use for the Edge, your phone will give much better walking feedback if you use an app that is designed to use the chipset and the accelerometer (I assume you have a smartphone). Just a suggestion...also, it might be time to get on the phone with Garmin, because the distance calc errors might be a lot more than simply off-label use of the device.

  • For what it's worth, in my Walking activity profile, under Navigation | Routing | Routing Mode, Pedestrian is selected.

Also, have someone walks at more than 5 km/h with your Edge to see if the minimum speed is the culprit.

  • The fact that the 1030 is calculating "distance" incorrectly while calculating "GPS distance" correctly makes me wonder how accurate the 1030 is at "bike speed".  Another thing to test when I am able to get back on the bike.
