Edge 800 vs 1030 while walking

I used both my Edge 800 and my 1030 for my walk today. The 800 showed 1.01 mile while the 1030 showed only 0.34 miles. Both are set to smart recording and auto pause off. The sum of distance in the fit files show 5376 ft for the 800 and 5392 ft for the 1300. Very odd that an old 800 works fine while the new, only a month old 1030 is in err.

I will test agains an edge, but why in earth is so important? As i told you those devices are not made for walking/ running

You may ask why I am using the Garmin Edge for walking instead of riding. I had double knee replacement surgery 5 weeks ago today and I am not able to even ride my trainer yet so.... My surgeon said that I should walk as much as possible so I like to see my recovery progress by monitoring the distance walked as well as the time/speed and heart rate. Should I have to purchase another GPS enabled device when I have some that should work.

Today, I made 5,25km walk with my Edge 1030. On arrival, I had the same distance and time that my wife had on her phone with MapmyRun. Chrono : 53:03.90 | Distance : 5.27 km | Average : 5.95 km/h

I also skate with my Edge... but you must hold it in your hands (same when walking), otherwise the Edge lose time or distance. Speed seems to be a problem so I try to be over 5 km/h.

The speed must be my problem walking with a cane. Odd though that it affects the1030 but not the 800

Sorry but did you read the manual?

Why you are using smart ? Actually I dont understand why Garmin has this functionality enabled by default

You have to set it to one second....

I have read the manual. I have also set the 1030 to 1 second recording - that didn't help. It seems that auto pause = off doesn't really work. The fit file contains the correct data but the display is incorrect.

It should matter if the gps is poor, 1 sec shoud be better

Did you connect your device to garmin connect recent?

What firmware do you have?

Second question, where do you keep your device while you are walking? In your hand , in your pocket?

Third question , do you walk near to tall buildings?
