Intensity minutes ‘problem’ since recent software upgrade

Anyone else noticing a real inconsistency in the ‘intensity minutes’ being attributed to rides since we did the recent software upgrade (which did fix the metres gained calculation)?

Today I rode 45kms with lots of 8 to 14 degree short burst hills and worked pretty hard over a 2 1/2 hour time. I had just over 70 minutes in heart rate zones 3 to 5. I recorded a 155 exercise load and was recorded as approx 120 intensity minutes.

On Thursday I rode 42 kms at a much more leisurely effort level and with less hills, taking 2 1/4 hrs. I had only 34 minutes in heart rate zones 3 to 5. I recorded an exercise load of only 81 yet was recorded as approx. 200 intensity minutes.

Prior to the recent upgrade the intensity minutes attribution has made sense - it no longer does!  Is this a known problem?

My Garmin HRM is model    AO3711 HRM Dual

While I do not know the exact heart rate at which the Intensity Minutes moves from Moderate to Vigorous for me, it is very clear that the calculation is based on your heart rate within the particular bands and can be very closely estimated.

The 1030 does not display the Intensity Minutes, so I am thinking it is correct to say the Edge series does not calculate them. However, so long as the 1030 is recording my heart rate during a ride it is not clear to me why Connect would NOT be able to calculate the Intensity Minutes.  Certainly on the few occasions when I have ridden without the HRM (or my Fenix 5 watch) then there is no reporting of Intensity Minutes on Connect (or Training Effect on Edge.)

I usually wear my Fenix 5 watch when I am riding but do NOT have it separately recording a ride (along with the 1030.) While I do not believe my wearing of the Fenix is what is enabling the calculation of Intensity Minutes, I will ride without it on Saturday and see if that makes a difference.

  • the Fenix is where the intensity minutes are coming from. It does not need to be recording to produce intensity minutes. Mystery solved.

Well. I have confirmed this morning that not wearing my Fenix 5 meant I did not get Intensity Minutes recorded, consistent with your comment.

I have to say I am very surprised and disappointed that the Intensity Minutes are not calculated from the heart rate data being recorded on my 1030. as the HRM provides much more accurate heart rate readings than the Fenix 5.
