Garmin Edge 1030 is stuck at the Loading courses, workouts, and locations screen

I grabbed my Garmin Edge 1030 to get ready for a ride, and then noticed that the battery was almost dead and the device was stuck at the boot-up screen.

I attempted to reset the device by pressing and holding down the #1 button until the device restarted. It does right back to the exact same screen (I left it running overnight doing this, thinking maybe it was just taking a while to load - no luck, was still at this screen).

The device will not completely power off, only reboot itself.

How do I fix this? I have reached out to Garmin Support multiple times and do not get a response.

I had this issue with a brand new unit. Deleting NewFiles didn't help. I rang Garmin support. Nothing they did helped, and they told me they needed to replace the unit.

I had the same issue last week. What I did was to plug in the 1030 to the charging cord to an electrical outlet and then I pressed the reset button and held for 30 seconds. This cleared it for me. What I read was that there were too many fit files in the new files folder and it was causing problems in the boot up process. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response, however, no luck.

I did as you suggested, plugging the device into the charging cable and the charging cable into an electrical outlet usb charger (instead of a PC). After holding the #1 button down for 30 seconds, the device screen went between the Garmin initial boot-up screen and blank, multiple times. After 30 seconds, I released the #1 button and the screen was at the Garmin boot-up screen, however this time it did not show the "Loading courses, workouts, and locations" message at the bottom. I unplugged the device and it powered off. When I powered the device back up, it went right to being stuck on the Garmin boot-up screen with the "Loading courses, workouts, and locations" at the bottom.

Hi,

I am currently experiencing the exact same issue.

I have followed the instructions provided in the online chat support without any success, and have subsequently been offered a replacement unit. As much as I grateful for this offer from Garmin, the time in between posting my current Edge 1030 and receiving a replacement would be an inconvenience that I am not too happy with.

I would much prefer it if my current unit could be fixed.

If you were able to fix this issue, or if anyone out there has any other suggestions l would be extremely grateful to hear them !

I had this issue with a brand new unit. Deleting NewFiles didn't help. I rang Garmin support. Nothing they did helped, and they told me they needed to replace the unit.

I managed to fix it with these steps;

Restart the garmin into mass storage (i.e. hold 2 while the unit starts up, hold 1 to restart) mode while connected to a PC with Garmin Express.

Delete the files in NewFiles.

Restart the unit again.

Connect with mass storage mode again.

If the files have reappeared in NewFiles, are they starred segments?

Delete these segments in strava or garmin.

In Garmin Express there may be an option to Install deleted segments, do this. Re-sync the device.

That sorted it for me.

The Garmin software team are not good, this issue has been around for years.

Thanks for this, loaded two new GPX files earlier today and it crashed my 1030+ and then my 830 as well. Followed your instructions to the letter and it fixed both! Thanks again.

I followed the above instructions, and solved the problem. My 1030 Plus was locked after downloading a gpx-file, that may have been corrupted somehow.
