The odometer on my Edge 10000 just set itself to 28,154 miles, thereby rendering itself useless.
Is there a way to reset this to either a plausible value, or zero?

AlasGuinns is referring to Edge 1000(0).
On this device you can reset totals and each profile seperately. At least with software 15.40
Homescreen - History - Totals
from here you can enter each profile but…
In earlier years I have used a procedure like described here:
Use http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ Upload and convert the Totals.fit file to a .csv file (exported as .txt).
Change total distance, time, calories…
Thanks! So... editing the Settings.fit file by following the 'kiesewetter' procedure as described for the Totals.fit file might also work to fill the odometer data with any non-zero value? Let's try and I let you know if that does what is intended.
I can tell only what I see on my devices 1000, 1030:
The odometer value displayed in the odometer data field on my devices show the km/milage of the current active profile taken from totals.fit. If you reset the value for that profile in History - Totals, the Odometer datafield shows 0.
I think Garmin applied a code change that now dynamically replaces the odo value at the UI level with the value for the current profile in the totals file. It still retains an overall unit odo value in the settings file, but that may no longer be accessible via the U for units that support multiple profiles.
In the meantime I was able to edit the Settings.fit file from my Edge Explore (not the kiesewetter procedure). There is an 'odometer' field containing a big value 7850123.08, meaning an odometer distance of 7850.12 km. After changing this number to 10000.00 (indicating 10.00 km), converting back to .fit format and setting back to the Explore via the Newfiles folder, the odometer field on the Explore did not change!
So this means more study needed!
The explore is a different beast as it only has one sports profile. I think it stores a value in the sports profile for the unit.
To close the issue about the Edge Explore because it is off-topic here:
In the sports profile file CyclingDefault.fit I could not find any value pointing to 'odometer' or 'distance' or alike, not even the actual odometer value. So no clue here.
In the Totals.fit file there are two 'distance' fields. One containing the Totals value that is displayed with Menu / History / Totals.
The other contains the value 20772749 (meters) that is displayed in the UI on my Explore as 'Odometer' reading 20772 km. Eureka! Thought I found the storage location for the odometer value. Changed it to 10000000 (10000 km) and converted the .csv file back to .fit. Removed the old Totals.fit from the folder Totals and placed the modified new Totals.fit in the folder Newfiles to let the Explore import it and locate it in the right folder. So far so good, but no success: the odometer field does not display the new vanlue 10000 km!
So? The location that I found in the Totals.fit file is not the right one, or maybe something went wrong while importing the new Totals.fit file. Maybe caused by a non-displayed checksum error because the file has been modified?
Let it be - I'll stop this off-topic stuff now.
