Sensors are 100% compatible.
Upgrading might be worthwhile. You get a bigger display & maybe better battery life.
The 1030 is much better for navigation. The 1030 is cheap now. You might be able be able to sell the 520+ for something.
Do it. I upgraded to a 1030 ($349 on Backcountry.com a couple months ago) and sold my 520+ for $150. The 1030 is better in every way, and ClimbPro is really cool (no ClimbPro backport for the 520 series…
I use regular gloves all the time with the 1030 without issue. Thicker gloves are a pain, but you don't need conductive gloves.
I don't. I never damaged a Edge device screen. However I got the rubber protector from garmin. That protecs the device if you drop it. And I also use the dragone that comes with the Edge. I tie it to the handlebar. So if the Edge comes undone from the mount it does not fall off.
Riding with heavy gloves in winter can be a problem with changing screens. If you have Di2 shifting though, the buttons on top of the hoods can be programmed to change screens with just a press.
Do you guys use a screen protector with your 1030?
I don't have. screen protector, but I do have a rubber case. This protects it from minor bumps and, most importantly, gives a bit of a lip around the edge... so if you put the unit face down on a table, the screen doesn't touch the surface and avoid getting scratched.
I don't use a screen cover, butlike other posters I recommend the silicone protective case. I bought this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078D6VGFP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Showed up in two days, fits great, color even matches the red decals on my S-Works.
