Sensors are 100% compatible.
Upgrading might be worthwhile. You get a bigger display & maybe better battery life.
The 1030 is much better for navigation. The 1030 is cheap now. You might be able be able to sell the 520+ for something.

Battery life is much better, the navigation is less glitchy, the touchscreen works great.
I've never had problem with cold weather, other than the battery doesn't last as long (neither do I, for that mater).
As for gloves, you'll need the kind that have fabric in the fingertip to help make touch screens respond. I don't know what the fiber is though. Maybe a small amount of metal?
