Is it worth upgrading from 520+ to 1030?

The 1030 is much better for navigation. The 1030 is cheap now. You might be able be able to sell the 520+ for something.

Thanks for the reply's.  My 520+ is only 18 months old so if I thought I could sell it then it definitely would made a difference in the decision to upgrade considering the price of the 1030.

Do it. I upgraded to a 1030 ($349 on Backcountry.com a couple months ago) and sold my 520+ for $150.  The 1030 is better in every way, and ClimbPro is really cool (no ClimbPro backport for the 520 series, per Garmin). Battery life is much better, the navigation is less glitchy, the touchscreen works great.

Since the pricelowering I would wait just a little bit. Maybe after the summer Garmin will announce a new flagship? Don't know but a price lowering often is the prelude of a new device. 

How does the 1030 touch screen behave during cold weather and using gloves?

I don´t have any problem, and I already use the edge bellow -17º, and with alot off rain to without problems

I've never had problem with cold weather, other than the battery doesn't last as long (neither do I, for that mater). 

As for gloves, you'll need the kind that have fabric in the fingertip to help make touch screens respond. I don't know what the fiber is though.  Maybe a small amount of metal?

I have 830 and 1030, unless you need the bigger screen go for the 830, it's a lot faster and has a better display (smaller, but better).
