7.20 appears to break Turn Guidance

The secondary route for Turn Guidance was calculated and you can see the list of turns and the magenta line but nothing happens beyond that.

It seems to think that you aren't moving.

The track following works.

Another rider with a 1030 on 6.30 didn't have the problem using the same route.

The route didn't quite begin where we started. I tried restarting the route many times and it had the same problem (the Turn Guidance part didn't think I was moving). The ancient 800 was able to pick up routes in the middle reliably. The Touring had similar problem starting routes in the middle (it thought you were at the start).

  • I have the same problem after update to 7.20.
  • :(
I thought that it was an route issue , on Saturday I had the same problem ,
Yesterday had another issue , in the middle of the ride, after a quick stop , Auto-pause and resume ride over and over again every second , it drive me crazy, I stopped and changed activity profile
  • I had the same problem on Saturday, just a magenta line, no turn prompts and distance counters were stuck on the same value.
  • It's somewhat encouraging that it isn't just me. It means it will be somewhat more likely that it will get fixed "soon".
  • I haven't tried turn guidance on 7.20 yet though will be over the next few days & will report back. I've put FIT, TCX & GPX versions of each course on the device in case it's one particular course file type that's causing issue. I have had similar problems prior to 7.20 though. It was with tcx courses I'd downloaded from RideWithGPS & no matter how many times I restarted the course it would calculate whilst doing so would give me the correct position & distance to destination. On completion of the calculation my position on the map was correct but it put me back to the start of the course & stayed there throughout the ride without giving any turn prompts I put it down to either some corruption in the file when downloaded from RideWithGPS or when the Edge converted it to the course fit file as I deleted the course from the Edge, downloaded the same course again from RideWithGPS and copied back to the Edge. The next day I used the course again it worked flawlessly
  • TCX (and gpx) files are just text files.

The Garmin converts TCX and GPX to fit.

If the source file was corrupted, it's likely the conversation would have failed (no fit file would have been produced).

One would also be able to see the corruption by looking at the file.
  • True though I didn't run the course through a parser to check the syntax.
I just wanted to report that I've seen similar symptoms just not on 7.20. & it seemed to work when I re-exported the course to the device. I does appear that more users are experiencing it now so maybe 7.20 has added some extra glitches with the navigation.

???????Like you said you would expect the fit conversion to fail on a corrupt source file.
  • I'm curious, is this issue occurring when the route has the same start and end location?
I have had similar issues on the Edge 1000. I've seen this on the Edge 1030 only on a specific route just after the middle of the ride. But I'm not sure if this is the same issue as you guys are describing.

dpawlyk, what do you mean with "the secondary route" in your initial post?
  • I also had this issue with both GPX and FIT files from RideWithGPS that I copied into the new files directory of the 1030 as I have always done. The courses would load but there were no turn-by-turn directions. This used to work on earlier software versions. I'm glad to hear it's not just me.
  • I'm curious, is this issue occurring when the route has the same start and end location?

Sometimes, if you start the calculation when you are closer to the end point than the start point, the device can pick the end point and decide you have finished. This happened regularly with the 800. One could get around this by restarting the route later in the course.

The problem I experienced last weekend with the 1030 it never figured I was not at the start for the calculated route (it was stuck at the start).

The track following worked fine. The virtual partner also progressed.

what do you mean with "the secondary route" in your initial post?

With "turn guidance", you are using two "routes". One is the track. The other is the calculated route.
