Importing routes

I'm trying to import some routes to my Garmin 1030. Doing the usual copy to NewFiles folder, but the problem is that no matter what i do maybe one or two courses will load to the device. If i try it again the courses initially loaded will be overwritten and maybe only one course will load. Tried both GPX and FIT format but still no joy. Absolutely no issues with my 810. I could import multiple courses with none of the said issues. Anybody any ideas ??

Edit............. Tried converting the files to tcx format and everything seems to be working ok now. Seems the 1030 doesn't like gpx or fit formats.

I have no trouble importing either gpx or fit format courses (all exported from RWGPS). When planning multi-day tours I've imported up to a couple of dozen at a time without any problems. That was with older versions of FW, but I'm presently running the latest 7.00 FW and imported three fit files this morning without any problem.
  • It's a strange one. I've had no issues with importing numerous routes onto the 810. I'm running FW 7.00 as well. Usually i download the routes in gpx format from bike-oisans.com with no issues importing them onto the 810. If i try to import say 10 routes maybe one or two will, if i try again they will get overwritten by a different route. Just makes no sense. I'll just have to put up with converting them to tcx for the time being.
  • Just a though, could it be your naming protocole.
Your routes should start with a different first letter for the names like:
    1day-Sandiego.fit
    2day-Sandiego.fit
    and not like:
    Sandiegoday-1.fit
    Sandiegoday-2.fit
    because they could overname themselves.
  • The names on the edge are truncated and rather short. Make sure you don't use long names that start the same with a difference at the end, they may overwrite each other if they exceed the number of characters the edge uses. I personally have a large number of courses and I prefex the names with a code of my making that identified the region, type of ride and distance with 6-8 character followed by a longer descriptive name. If the Edge cut it and is always after my prefix with is unique by design so I have no issue.

    BDonnelly,
I found I had the same issue as you. I was trying to import .gpx files created in RWGPS and they wouldn't appear in the courses folder. Loading them as tcx files worked.
I tried truncating one of the file names as martin 868 above says and it then worked (I used 10 characters but I have a feeling 16 might be the limit).

Also be aware there is still the issue with course timing sometimes not working. https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-1030-aa/1431624-creating-a-course-from-gpx-file-timing-issues.

Generally, if you have a gpx file then upload it to RWGPS then dowload it again, then open the file on a computer in either basecamp or mapsource, truncate the file name, then save it then send it to the new files folder you can be somewhat confident that you will be able to use the course as a pacer.
  • The 1030 doesn't appear to have a problem loading routes. If it did, there would be many threads about it (that aren't 1 year old).

The problem being discussed in this old thread appears to due to the course name being truncated.

All of the Garmins have this issue.

It's easy to avoid: make sure the names are unique in the first 15 letters.

  • I had the same issue.  The route names were different.  I also tried deleting my other saved routes, thinking I had too many already saved.  But uploading them as a tcx file worked.

    Thank you!

  • The Edge 1030 has a limited maximum number of routes allowed to be saved onto the device.  Once you reach the limit, no more can be installed.  Try deleting several (or all) of your routes and try again. Back up your routes onto a computer before deleting the whole list.
