How Much Longer Does the Battery Last in Save Mode?

I used Battery Save Mode for most of one ride when my original 1030 was new. But since my reason for having a computer on my bikes is to see what is going on, I haven't used it since, except for a time or two when the battery reached the 10% level. I have done several tests of battery life, with the Edge 1030 alone, and also with the External Battery Pack. I have seen nearly 23 hours on the Edge alone, and nearly 52 hours for the Edge + External Battery Pack. These tests obviously require several days to run.

Do any of you routinely run your Edge in Battery Save Mode? How much longer has your battery life been compared to running in normal mode? I'm curious, but I'd rather see my data than ride for two weeks "in the dark".

One friend is planning to ride Paris-Brest-Paris next year, and I advised her to get the 1030 and battery pack. 50 hours of battery life might be enough to complete the ride without recharging, but some safety margin would be a good thing.
  • Colin. I regularly use my 1030 in battery save mode. I quite regularly do 200 milers which means starting in the dark. Generally I know where I'm going for the first 60 / 70 miles and so have battery save mode enabled during the night whilst navigation is turned on. I used turn by turn navigation which pops up at every junction. Night time and navigation are big consumers of power. And then at some stage during the day I will turn to normal mode, probably for 4 hours or so whilst I'm doing some navigating and then back to battery save mode.

I regularly get through this kind of ride with 40 - 50% battery life remaining.
  • What do you guess the battery level would be if you were navigating, but not using battery save mode? Maybe 20 - 30%? Or less? Oh, and do you have the background light set to zero?

I may have to run a test, boring as that promises to be. P-B-P is 1200km (750 miles).

I received an email today from Garmin, saying they'd delivered their 200,000,000th device. As a reward, customers can get 30% off on up to 3 accessories. I checked, and the external battery pack is included. The price comes down from $129.99 to $90.99 US, and I was able to order two batteries and one speed sensor as my three items. (I didn't actually complete the order.)
  • If you just want to record data, the edge will last forever in battery save mode. I did an 18 hr ride with wifi and bluetooth turned off and battery save mode on + all alerts turned off, and I still had 90% battery by the end of it.

If you are navigating the battery will die much quicker, especially if you are just sitting on the map page, but you should still get 15-20 hrs if the backlight is low.
