Shimano di2 - wu111 issue

Hi all

Bluetooth connection between 1030 and shimano WU111 DI2 is simply a nightmare. If you don"t succeed to perform firmware upgrade for any reason, you simply have your Di2 blocked.

But the good news is that if you have latest 6.0 1030 release, battery of shimano simply go to 0 in a couple of hours,. If you connect shimano and 1030.

Sometime ago garmin was more customer feedback oriented company, I bought more or less 10 different units, but right now qualty of product (halo problem for 1030 is just an example) and first of all software quality let me think that I have to find better company for my electronics sport devices.

  • The Edge does not use Bluetooth to talk with the Di2. All communication is over a private ANT implementation.

When the WU111 is in Bluetooth mode it shuts down the ANT channel. You need to make sure to take it out of Bluetooth mode.
  • Thank you very much for your answer, how can I take out Bluetooth mode of WU111
  • If you are using the e-tube phone app there is an option in the UI to disconnect from BLE

Has happened a few times to me as well. If you've been connected via the e-tupe app and BLE and forget to disconnect properly in the app, the Di2 battery runs flat over a night easily. Always remember to disconnect.
  • That will work for all Di2 components except the new D-fly, that can only be updated over BLE.

I did a firmware upgrade of my WU111 with a cable without any issues.
  • Maybe they changed it, but when it first came out it could only be updated via the phone app and not the PC app.
  • In my case it was few weeks ago. Reading about all the issues people have updating their d-fly via Bluetooth (risk of Di2 freeze) when I received the wu111 first thing I did, after installation in Di2, was connecting it to the PC via cable. It was recognized with the possibility to upgrade the firmware to the currently available recent version which I did with no problem or additional e-tube prompts.
I did it though before paring the wu111 to any smartphone or headunit. BLE in the d-fly had been never activated at that time. Maybe this fact was what made the difference.

I installed the wu111unit. It was recognized by the edge 1030 and everything was working fine. After that I wanted to try the etube app on my Ipad. The app said there was a firmware update available for the wu111 unit. Started to update but it was very slow so I left it to update. When I came back it said 'update failed' and my whole Di2 system didn't work anymore. I had to go through a tedious reset procedure to make it work again. Lesson learned. Never again I am going to update via BLE.
  • :o mine also aborted the update via BLE android
had to disconnect the battery in the seatpost to revive the Di2
it aborted the update via BLE three times, but the next update went on from where it left the previous update
that was a scary experience :)

Indeed scary. My battery is in the seattube somewhere. It was more of a hassle to disconnect the battery. BLE, I don't trust that anymore. I hook it up with a cable to my PC once in a while.
