Edge will not stay connected to Android phone

I've not been able to figure out how to have consistent connections between my Edge 1030 and my Android phone (Google Pixel XL). Sometimes it will connect when I power on the Edge, and sometimes it won't. One thing for sure is if I open the Connect app, the Edge is always able to connect, but I don't think that is the way it's supposed to work. I believe it should connect to the phone regardless of whether the app is in the foreground or not.
I was having better luck with a version of Connect from earlier this year, but lately, that's not working too well anymore.
I understand the issues that the developers are facing with different phones, and versions of Android...I deal with it every day. I develop Android applications, and embedded firmware for BTLE enabled medical devices.
If you guys at Garmin would be interested in some help with the connection issues (not that I think you aren't capable), please contact me. I am the senior partner at an engineering consulting firm. We specialize in developing cutting edge products that are very robust and deal with these kind of issues. We understand how companies can be overwhelmed to get to all of the issues.
If I'm not correct in my assumptions that the Edge should connect to and remain connected to a mobile device (iOS excluded!) regardless of the state of the app, please correct me.

Thanks,

Greg

    Hello,
I have the 1030 and the S8 with the latest firmware and have constant connectivity issues. I use the complete Varia package (Headlamp, turn signals, and rear RADAR), Cadence/Speed sensors and rarely ever have connectivity issue using ANT+. Using Bluetooth I use the hopday BT headset and my edge 1030, which I do get connectivity issue with my headset when I manually synch my 1030 to Garmin app. It will recoonect and continue playing where it left off once the last 10% of the sych as finished. On the other hand if I step away from the bike (stopping at cafe to grab some food) the headset will reconnect the 1030 will not, which something my 820 would reconnect. Also sporadically the 1030 will disconnect during a ride either fully where the phone disconnected message will appear or it will disconnect in a way that no message will appear on the 1030 and on the mobile app will still show connectivity, but Live Tracking stops working, messaging to the phone will not appear on the 1030, and at the end of the ride it will not auto upload. This happens if I use my Bluetooth headset or not. If I un-pair and re-pair it will remedy the issue for a short time (about a week), but then it will come back. Is there anything I can do to get this to work as advertised?

I thought that was unique to me and my imagination. 3 guys rang me at that point to see if the unit would flag any or all calls. Despite claiming to still be connected it failed to see any of the calls.
Should be surprised that it happened, but this thing appears capable of finding ever more ways to hack me off.
  • I had this same problem: my Bontrager Garmin Edge 1030 would not connect to my Pixel 2 XL (Android 9 Pie) unless I opened Garmin Connect Mobile in the foreground--even though bluetooth was active on both devices.

Here is what fixed it for me:
    - I deleted Garmin Connect Mobile from my phone
    - I "forgot" the Pixel 2 XL on the Edge 1030
    - I reinstalled Garmin Connect
    - I re-paired the two through bluetooth

Now the connection is persistent: when I start the Edge 1030, "Phone Connected" pops up shortly thereafter. Hope this helps someone.
  • I have this issue with both my 1030 and my 735xt, I carry my phone either in my back jersey pocket or in a hip pocket if I am running and the connection is constantly connecting/disconnecting. Mine became a MAJOR safety problem when I crashed my bike last September, the phone was in my back pocket, not connected to the 1030, so when crash detection happened, no messages to my contacts were sent. Luckily, I had teammates with me to make the calls, but had I not, I would have laid in the ditch til someone found me.

This needs to be fixed or quit advertising the crash detection notification as a safety feature. Same for LiveTracking, does no good to start it if it is going to stop when the phone disconnects, does my family no good in keeping track of where I am.

My phone Samsung S7 is not conecting with 1030 automatically since 4.04.2019
It connects after I turn on Location on the phone and GCM. Later I can switch off location and GCM.
    It is really frustrating. :(

Before 4.04.2019 phone connected with 1030 automaticlly without any extra procedures.
