Edge will not stay connected to Android phone

I've not been able to figure out how to have consistent connections between my Edge 1030 and my Android phone (Google Pixel XL). Sometimes it will connect when I power on the Edge, and sometimes it won't. One thing for sure is if I open the Connect app, the Edge is always able to connect, but I don't think that is the way it's supposed to work. I believe it should connect to the phone regardless of whether the app is in the foreground or not.
I was having better luck with a version of Connect from earlier this year, but lately, that's not working too well anymore.
I understand the issues that the developers are facing with different phones, and versions of Android...I deal with it every day. I develop Android applications, and embedded firmware for BTLE enabled medical devices.
If you guys at Garmin would be interested in some help with the connection issues (not that I think you aren't capable), please contact me. I am the senior partner at an engineering consulting firm. We specialize in developing cutting edge products that are very robust and deal with these kind of issues. We understand how companies can be overwhelmed to get to all of the issues.
If I'm not correct in my assumptions that the Edge should connect to and remain connected to a mobile device (iOS excluded!) regardless of the state of the app, please correct me.

Thanks,

Greg
  • Same experience here. Multiple disconnects with only GCM open on phone (Galaxy S9, v8.0). Occasionally must unpair, repair to establish a connection at all. BT devices include latest generation Dura-Ace D-fly/Di2, Bontrager DuoTrap, Bontrager Flare network of lights and Garmin HRM (Polar strap), Pebble smartwatch.
I never had this problem with previous Edge models.

I find it incredible and unacceptable that this problem has yet to be resolved in over a year.
  • This morning I replicated your set up exactly (cept USA vs UK) with same phone, android version, sensors, WiFi off BT on and GC running the whole time. That would have to work, surely? Why wouldn't there be consistency across the machines. But no, the ride did not upload automatically. As is usually the case (with WiFi on) with your setup, it would only upload via cable. I think disconnection has not happened often for me, though data corruption has been a nightmare.

Sorry that did not help. If you don't mind me asking, if you have not already, is it possible for you to uninstall and reinstall GC on your phone (with WiFi off on the edge)? I know that after some updates I had issues and each time deleting and reinstalling GC on my phone fixed them. I know that is a pain but it has definitely improved my experience with the 1030.

I think one other subtle difference in our situations is that my US S7E will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon and yours will be using the Samsung Exynos. The BT radios are probably also different. It seems like a possible source of the issue has to do with the RF signal power (perhaps in one direction or the other). When I ride I have my phone in a Camelbak. I assume most folks phones are no further from their 1030s than that. How far is your phone from your 1030? Also, is there any chance you are getting interference from some outside source (overhead power lines) when you disconnect.

When I used Polar stuff my speed sensor would disconnect every time I rode under one particular set of power lines. The 1030 sometimes loses a sensor for a few seconds in that area but is usually OK. Along those same lines on rides with disconnects are you getting texts or incoming phone calls? I don't think I have ever had a call come in - I am just not all that popular :)- but I have had texts come in without incidence.

Just trying to help. I guess I am thinking that I am likely not the only one who has a working setup so trying to isolate a difference might be useful.
  • Also, as posted by Microkid on the "Bluetooth Pairing issue" thread:

"Very important that you do NOT pair using the iPhone bluetooth settings. First, forget the bluetooth devices on your iphone and 1030. Then, start the Garmin Connect on the iphone and start the pairing proces. on the 1030, also start the pairing proces when requested. On the iphone, a "select device" window appears, select the 1030 to be paired. The 1030 will show a pincode, and the iPhone will show the same pincode. Accept and continue. The process can take a minute or so, some stuff is downloaded to the iphone. I just did this myself and it works fine."

This is equally important for Android.

Oh I know you're just offering help - why I gratefully accepted the chance to replicate your set up. My edge 1000 was near flawless on uploading rides; the 1030 although briefly ok (4 at most) it remains pathetically hopeless. I have paired and re-paired ad nauseam, always making the units forget each other first, I do recall that on day 1, when trying to copy my data from the 1000 to 1030 it failed miserably, something I dismissed as user error looks ever more likely Garmin inadequacies. Phone in back pocket on road rides and in camelbak for off road..
I've pretty much written off the 1030 as a failed product and in the process becoming totally alienated to G. If they can't admit the 1030 should be scrapped or devote sufficient resources to remedy a failing and relatively expensive flagship product then I'm done with them.
  • I figured you had done things correctly but I thought it was worth one last try.

It really seems that only a manufacturing issue could be causing the issues. I wonder if every 1030 is identical. Are there multiple board vendors? Are the chipsets different for different regions? Something along those lines.

If it is a hardware issue in some units causing BT problems, on the units that have problems, then firmware updates will likely not fix things.

    Best of luck.

Been my suspicion for some time as hardware failings can only be resolved by hardware resolutions. Some guys still have problems with some power meters losing battery charge whilst inactive whilst others cope admirably, Mine are all ok, but the acid test is the guy who has one which is great and the other constantly losing charge - same disciplines & attitudes, stored next to each other!
Good to meet you. Thanks for your help and advice. Ride safe!
  • Hello,
I have the 1030 and the S8 with the latest firmware and have constant connectivity issues. I use the complete Varia package (Headlamp, turn signals, and rear RADAR), Cadence/Speed sensors and rarely ever have connectivity issue using ANT+. Using Bluetooth I use the hopday BT headset and my edge 1030, which I do get connectivity issue with my headset when I manually synch my 1030 to Garmin app. It will recoonect and continue playing where it left off once the last 10% of the sych as finished. On the other hand if I step away from the bike (stopping at cafe to grab some food) the headset will reconnect the 1030 will not, which something my 820 would reconnect. Also sporadically the 1030 will disconnect during a ride either fully where the phone disconnected message will appear or it will disconnect in a way that no message will appear on the 1030 and on the mobile app will still show connectivity, but Live Tracking stops working, messaging to the phone will not appear on the 1030, and at the end of the ride it will not auto upload. This happens if I use my Bluetooth headset or not. If I un-pair and re-pair it will remedy the issue for a short time (about a week), but then it will come back. Is there anything I can do to get this to work as advertised?

I am wondering if there has been an improvement made to Garmin Connect - I launched it earlier this week, it asked something along the lines of stay permanently connected to my 1030, and since then, my phone connects and stays connected reliably

What phone and OS? What version of GCM?

The connection between my phone Sony Xperia XZ1 was okay.
    version 1030 6.3, Android 8.0.0, Garmin app??
What has been changed is the Garmin app to version 4.1.3.3, but also Android has been updated to 9.0.0!
I don't know when the App has been updated!
Live tracking was okay but doesn't work anymore because the connection drops.
