Edge 1030 Memory Card Question

I have a question pertaining to the memory card you can insert into the back of the 1030, so in the edge 1030 garmin manual it says it supports memory cards up to 2TB but they have to be formatted to FAT32 I do not know how to do that and would like to increase my devices memory what is the max size card the unit will accept without having to be formatted to FAT32?
  • FAT32 supports only up to 32GB volumes. Therefore, do not buy an MicroSD card beyond 32GB or you will have trouble formatting it. (Yes it is possible but not easily...)

thanks for the tip I am looking to upgrade the memory of my device and there are so many different kinds of cards out there I didnt know where to start. And you said formatting it do I have to format a card 32gb or under to get it to work with the 1030 or can I simply stick it in and go?
  • By default, memory cards which are 32GB and less should be formatted to FAT32. You can check your card (Windows) by right-clicking on the drive and choosing Properties. On Mac, press Apple Key + I to get the info on the drive.

Thanks! But I’m not sure I understand what FAT32 does exactly?
  • Files are stored on cards and disks in small pieces called "blocks". FAT32 is a particular way of organizing blocks.

The maximum file size for FAT32 is 4 GB.

The maximum disk size for FAT32 is 8 TB.

Microsoft Windows imposes an artificial 32 GB limit for formatting but can use larger FAT32 disks.

If you have a card that is larger than 32 GB, you have to use some other formatting program or method (you can't use Windows).

Large cards (> 32 GB) are probably not formatted in FAT32 (these would have to be reformatted).

    ============================================

The 1030 has 16 GB of memory. The maps use about 6 GB. There is a lot of free space. You really shouldn't need to use an extra card.

One reason to use a card is if you want to use the Garmin CN (or other maps) maps that are provided on SD cards.

If you use other large maps, it much faster to copy them on the SD card plugged into your computer or card reader rather than copying them to the 1030 plugged into your computer.

    Why?

There should be lots of free space on the unit. For hundreds of courses or activities (more than you'd likely want to scroll through).

The user interface of the unit itself isn't very convenient for many files.

Simply I am trying to figure out why the 1 second intervals that my device should be recording isn't. The only thing I could think of is the memory in the edge 1030 cannot support the 1 second intervals. So I am trying a solution which is simple and easy to see if that is my issue.

No one would have been able to guess that that is your problem,

There is more than enough space in the internal memory to record many hundreds of rides at 1 second intervals.

    It's not the memory.

It's supposed to work (if it doesn't, it's a bug).

How much free space do you have on the device?

I have a total usable amount of 14.4 of that I've used 6.23 so I have 8.17 remaining to be used. I can pm you a fit file of the activity if you want to take a look at it.

The closest spacing im getting for my last ride with the 1 second intervals turned is 3 seconds across the board of every sensor this is better but not the 1 sec intervals I'm supposed to be getting.
