EDGE 1030 bad first experience

I have been using Garmin Bike Computers for years, I bike 5-6 days a week, so use them a lot. Pretty much all of them have worked well. My Edge 1000 recently died, so I purchased a 520 as a stopgap till my 1030 arrived today. 520 worked fine, even though no touch screen and pretty basic. First workout today with the 1030. Awful. Had to start and stop the workout 4 times, and then the hard efforts were not done properly because I could not see the data I needed on the screen.

Screens would switch at random to all sorts of different screens, not just data screens. No pattern. Might work well for 5 minutes, then go berserk.

I disabled phone alerts, then deleted any other data screens in the activity, then disabled weather, These things should work.

I'm not sure if I have a lemon or some setting or interference is causing these issues. I use a TACX FLUX trainer. Initially, I had added the trainer, but then thought it might be causing problems so just added it as sensors, i.e. power, speed/distance and cadence.

Touch screen does not work at all now. Can't even shut it down properly. Not happy at all.
  • Yes, the edge 1030 is not as bad as we can read in some posts : for me it is a lot better than the 820 : the touch screen is better, the grade is better, the total elevation is good.
Following a course is quite easier with the large screen.
    The battery is better.
For me, there are only 2 or 3 issues like the Virtual partner (I wrote about this but nobody answered), the issue of the remote and the stress scrore, but I am sure the next firmawre will fixe this issues.
I bougt the 820 last year and I thing the 1030 is a lot better than the 820 was after 3 months in the market.

Garmin will never stop doing this, because they think we are idiots.

After reading posts in the Vector and Edge groups I'm starting to think a lot of you people are idiots.
  • Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to mention I had reported the remote issues as well.
  • We appreciate the feedback. Having our customers be beta testers is not our business model and we apologize for the frustration some of you have expressed here. Please feel free to reach out to me personally via PM if you have specific problems with your device that needs our attention.

Your bussiness model should be to release decent working products, not stuff that looks like it has never been tested before release.
Garmin software on the Edges is poor to say the least and prone to crash.
I come here since i bought a 810 4 years ago and every Edge released since then is NOT STABLE software wise.
If you type the word "crash" in search in here you get more hits then typing the word porn on Google.
  • I have read a lot of posts of folks who have issues with their units. My unit was worked pretty great since the day that I purchased it. The only issue I have had is that it occasionally (a couple of times over a couple of months) has frozen up after downloading a ride. I have not lost any data nor had issues with following routes that required re-routing. I would imagine that most folks share my experience. I think the question is whether when a handful of folks report an issue is it a manufacturing problem (some % of bad units escaping production) or is it a ubiquitous problem (that most folks just don't happen to tickle).

I feel bad for folks who are having a hard time getting their units to operate to their satisfaction, but I feel the need to come on here occasionally and point out that not everyone is having issues.

For the record I have my 1030 paired with a Samsung S7E (latest Verizon software), I have wifi off on my 1030 and my phone while I ride (phone won't drop wifi connection near my house - this is an issue with my phone not the 1030), I have 3 ANT+ sensors (Garmin speed, Garmin cadence, Garmin HR).

  • The only issue I have had is that it occasionally (a couple of times over a couple of months) has frozen up after downloading a ride.

So you find freezing of your device acceptable?
Would you accept that your TV suddenly freezes while watching a movie and that have to "reboot" to continue watching.
Would you accept that your new car all of sudden shuts down and that you have to restart it to continue?
Would you accept that your Samsung S7E freezes or shuts down while using it?

If no, why whould you accept that your 1030 does this?

And more, it's not only the 1030 that does this but all Edges are having the same problem during their life time (some even during their entire life time). I find it unacceptable that Garmin products are released in such a poor software state and that it takes for them to come with a solution. And not only that, some problems are solved eventueally but then when a new product is released, you'll find exactly the same problems with it that have been solved before on older devices.

  • Occasionally I have to reboot my phone, or my computer or turn something off and on to get it to behave. If it happens frequently then it is not tolerable. The few times my 1030 froze up was when I was riding with my phone's wifi turned on. When I get to my house I stop my ride by the community mailbox. I believe the issue is that my phone was connecting to the wifi, but not well enough to reliably transmit and receive data (I see this issue with other apps on my phone when I am outside of my house - the apps sometimes hang). I think the root of the problem was the 1030 was uploading to my phone (via Garmin Connect) and that the unreliable link of the phone to the internet was caused the issue.

I have not had any issues since having the wifi turned off on my phone.

I agree that it would be great if everything worked perfectly all the time in every situation, but to have 2 minor freeze ups in ~50 rides does not seem too outrageous to me. Especially for a new device. Thus, I am quite happy.

So, an update. Amazon replaced my 1030, I set it up, used it for the first ride today. Worked fine so far, so the initial unit was obviously a lemon. Let's see how it goes from now on. I have used Garmin bike computers since the 705 and for the most part has been pretty reliable. When I had issues, they were replaced.

I can say that my 1030 is doing its job nicely (my edge 705 still rides on my city bike at the moment) two weeks running, no crashes no bugs during the ride, touch screen works fine with my gloves (giro xen - hope it will be as fine with my winter gloves), I’m having connection problems with GE running MacOS (I have to set it up each time on and on) no problems on Windows, I’m waiting some feedback from Garmin about that.
