EDGE 1030 bad first experience

I have been using Garmin Bike Computers for years, I bike 5-6 days a week, so use them a lot. Pretty much all of them have worked well. My Edge 1000 recently died, so I purchased a 520 as a stopgap till my 1030 arrived today. 520 worked fine, even though no touch screen and pretty basic. First workout today with the 1030. Awful. Had to start and stop the workout 4 times, and then the hard efforts were not done properly because I could not see the data I needed on the screen.

Screens would switch at random to all sorts of different screens, not just data screens. No pattern. Might work well for 5 minutes, then go berserk.

I disabled phone alerts, then deleted any other data screens in the activity, then disabled weather, These things should work.

I'm not sure if I have a lemon or some setting or interference is causing these issues. I use a TACX FLUX trainer. Initially, I had added the trainer, but then thought it might be causing problems so just added it as sensors, i.e. power, speed/distance and cadence.

Touch screen does not work at all now. Can't even shut it down properly. Not happy at all.
  • We certainly don’t like to hear that you had issues with your Edge 1030. I did notice that you emailed into support with your concerns today and we want to get this sorted out ASAP. We will reply to your email and get to the bottom of what is going on with your device. Apologies for the frustration.

  • Thanks, There could be a better way to deal with defective products. As it stands now, I have to wait a week for a replacement from Amazon. We all use these products a lot, I use mine 5-6 days a week, so not having it is frustrating. Guess I'll have to use Zwift for now. Seems this was a one-off issue as the reps at Garmin told me they have not encountered this before.
  • When will you managers & programmers stop producing non-working goods on sale?

Garmin will never stop doing this, because they think we are idiots.
What if we all return them 1030 ?
Because at this point they should return all our money, for selling a product not in accordance with the description.

Have a nice day, Garmin... :)

  • I was excited when the 1030 was announced and thought maybe this time it would be a sorted product. Then I remembered all the frustration I had with my 800, and the hell other users went through with their 1000. And now seeing all the comments in the forum, there’s no way in hell I'm giving Garmin another dime.

Everyone here should send them back and get a refund, ASAP. $699 to be a beta tester for Garmin ??? Please - Garmin should be PAYING you guys to use it.

Imagine if your car/fridge/tv/di2/you name it/ was riddled with as many problems - you’d be screaming bloody murder.

    Garmin - never again.

  • In 4.January Garmin released 6.10 FW for Edge 810, after that release, several things does not work as it should, devices crashes while you are navigating or stop the activity

After 10 months (TEN ) they have released an Public beta 6.11 that is fixing the issue (I am really surprise that they even bother)
-Fixed a crash that can occur when starting or ending a ride with a course or workout active.

And now they want us to test the firmware for them.....

    How cool is that?

  • We appreciate the feedback. Having our customers be beta testers is not our business model and we apologize for the frustration some of you have expressed here. Please feel free to reach out to me personally via PM if you have specific problems with your device that needs our attention.
  • Don't get me wrong, is good that you have beta program , for example I have tested in the past different versions of beta FW
What is not OK , to let an device with an know issue without fixing it several months , I understand that Edge 810 is old

Let's discuss about 1030 , as an actual user and potential buyer I aspect that the issues will be fixed

    Thanks for your feedback
  • I wanted to let you know that I have the 1030 and ride 1500 km with it so far. Without any problems I have Di2 cadans HRM and a Tacx NEO Samsung S8 and Radar vision tail light all works fine with the 1030. do lot of navigation km's too.
Perhaps I am just lucky but my edge 1030 works flawless (waiting for the Garmin Vector 3 my birthday is next week 18/11 and hope that the vector 3 is then available Garmin?
  • FWIW - I have no issues either except the Edge remote disconnecting. It's getting cold outside here where I live, so I can onlye comment on indoor riding. While riding, I'm connected to my phone, cad and speed sensor, HRM run. I'm still waiting for my vector 3's, but that's a whole different story...

I played a lot with mapping and calculating routes with OSM maps. I had one crash during 4 hours of testing. I don't think that's to much to ask. So my Edge does actually work OK here too.

Regarding battery in getting about 4-5% pr hour. That's about 20 hours in total.

If only we can get the Edge remote fixed in next firmware, that would be great. Besides from that, I'm happy with the Edge 1030.
  • Same issue here: remote always disconnects.
I have heared, Garmin is aware of it - so, hopefully next firmware will resolve it.

I did a lot of testing outside and I have to say: it is the best Edge I ever had (800, 1000 before).
    TBT finally works!
    No crashes!
All other sensors are stable - no problem.
    iPhone connected right away!

The display for indoor-training however is badly. But outdoor - excellent!

    I love my 1030!
