How Do I Set/Reset the Odometer?

You need to quickly ride up to that number. It is a feature that was left out of the Edge 1000, and also seems to be missing from the 1030. A number of people have complained about the inability to set a starting number, but so far, Garmin hasn't seen fit to add that bit of code back in to the software.

Garmin's general path for awhile now is that you'd use apps like Garmin Connect or Strava to show accumulated distance and per bike distance rather than tracking that on the device. Many people have multiple devices so for them that works better. Obviously it doesn't make everyone happy.

There are at least two ways to achieve what you want.

Reporting on arbitrary ("Custom") periods is possible in Garmin Connect.

1. Go to https://connect.garmin.com/modern/re...ast_seven_days for example and select Progress Summary right at the bottom on the list of reports. You can get to the reports page by clicking on the title of any Reports widget on the dashboard.
2. In the "Report on" drop-down select "Custom".
3. Select your activity type in the "on" drop-down e.g. Cycling
4. Using the calendar widgets select your date range.
5. Click on the "Customize" cog to add or remove fields.
6. Enjoy your report.

This kind of help should be in the FAQ, but it isn't. On the main help page Reports isn't mentioned.

Another maybe better way you can achieve this that is immediately visible in GC without having to mess with the Reports page is to use Gear. Once set up it will always be there on your dashboards.

1. If you haven't already created one, make a bike type of gear for each of your bikes here. You can set the bike to be added to each activity automatically, and here you can retrospectively apply it to all previous rides. Make sure you do this to avoid the next step. You only get the opportunity when you create a new item of gear.
2. Make sure there is a "Bike" type of gear assigned to every cycling activity you've ever done.
3. If you rode the bike before logging any Garmin activities then you can create an activity for the previous distance. I think Garmin lets you create one that is 1500 km max, so if you cycled further than that you need to create several such activities.
4. Add the Gear widget to a dashboard.
5. Select the bike. It will show the total distance in the widget.

There's an example here. It is also possible to set the maximum distance so you can see how close you are to some target.

You can create as many items of gear as you like, have all your bikes, different iterations as your change equipment. You could use it to track tyre wear, chain wear etc., anything you like. This is really excellent if you are a data geek.

Maybe this is why Garmin ditched the ability to set the odometer to a distance greater than zero, although it is still possible on older devices such as the 310XT where it can be done for each bike.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm a little disappointed. As far as I can see, Garmin Connect will only show accumulated cycling distance for the last 12 months - nothing before that. No way to see what total distance is for the last 5 years, for example. It was nice to have every cycling mile accumulate on my Edge800 so I could keep a "lifetime" record, not just a rolling 12 month total.

Not "lifetime". It maxes out just before 43,000km :-).

I use 'fitsed' (http://pub.ks-and-ks.ne.jp/cycling/fitsed.shtml) for this but it involves a bit of geekery.

Newer Edge models raised the odometer limit by inclusion of a rollover counter.

I am finishing up a macOS GUI to reset the device odometer and activity profile distances. It uses fitsed. There appears to already be a windows program to do that, this is for a Macintosh only, and the only device I have is an Edge 1000. I'll need a week to finish up. I am willing to test on your Settings.fit file; the more devices I have tested the better. If you are interested let me know, and I'll send out a new Settings.fit file to you.

It was convenient to have the Edge show my distance by each bike, and to be able to reset the totals at the start of each year, but I was already doing this in an Excel spreadsheet, so the best the Edge could do for me was to match the information I already had. Don't any of you keep spreadsheets of your cycling activities? My Edge history goes from 705 to 800 to 1000 to 1030; my spreadsheets go back even further.

I like having the distance of each bike available too. That number is not easily to get in Garmin Connect. So, I have used spreadsheets for many years. But, about 8 years ago I found the program Cycistats which does a better job of keeping track of the miles than a spread sheet. I just enter which bike and the miles. Lots of other features but too time consuming to add all that information. I also put in when I replace a chain and it can immediately show how many miles are on the chain. I believe it is still available as a free download. RWGPS can do a report of each bikes miles but it does take a number of clicks to get to it and it is difficult to track other equipment.
