edge 1030 frozen

after 10 minutes i was going through some settings i turned off and when i tried to turn it on again is frozen on the loading course, workouts and location page. welcome back to garmin new products . Of course i tried hard reset also but same problem..
  • I have the exact same problem - did you manage to resolve it?
  • gscollins yes actually i did it. i open the memory card slot and move the blocker in the up position. not sure why but after that it worked out. expect a lot of different and not necessarily better things vs the 1000
  • thanks. i'll try that. It's driving me mad.very disappointing.
  • going through some settings
you didn't happen to add a Wifi did you ? Actually, I had the unit connected to my PC, and added the Wifi through Garmin Express.....when I disconnected the USB cable, it just sat for ever at "loading course, workouts and location".
Soft reset made no difference...did not try a hard reset.
Eventually, reconnected the unit to PC, which did see it fine, removed Wifi and re-saved. This time, I disconnected from USB and the unit powered up just fine. Could have been a coincidence, or simply re-saving "stuff" kicked it back into life.
  • Boys we gonna have some hard time I think.
    a) strava segments works only if is connected to Iphone (high battery drain)
    b) you can't Not Save an activity . Only option is to save it
    c) climb gradient unrealible. It's stucks at max 4% then only after you pass to 7/8 % , start again to work but still lower then it should
    e) you can't find how many satellites are locked
    f) Bluetooth button nowhere (it connects automatically with iPhone ) only after you open the app. Basically if the app doesn't work on background many options are unavailable
    g) display visibility is definitely NOT better then the 1000, actually all the way around.
    h) auto sleep doesn't work
    i) if you go slower then 9.66 km/h looks like is not recording , so no very steep climbs
and I am sure other stuff will come out. This was only on the first day !

on the good side the battery is slightly better and the ratio of discharging is about 8% per hour compared to 10% of the 1000.
  • Got it back up and running now. Problem happened when I was trying update the firmware to 3.2. Spent 3-4 hours trying various resets - then after one of the many resets it decided to load up - so no idea what happened. I'll finally be able to give it a first ride out tomorrow. I'd read about the problems with the gradient - but I'd hoped that was 'fixed' with the latest firmware (have you updated to 3.2?).

I run into the same problem with my Edge 1030. Having received the device just this day and trying to set it up, I ended up with a device which would't boot up, no matter what keys I pressed and how often I did a reset. It just stood there with its message "loading course and ... " showing on the screen for eternity.
But then I remembered that I indeed had set up a WiFi network using Garmin Express just before this problem started. So I connected the 1030 to the PC, started Garmin Express and removed the WiFi network and voilá: the 1030 started just as it should. So it really seems that Garmin Express somehow breakes the Garmin Edge 1030 when it is used to set up a WiFi network.
It is not a problem with WiFi in general - after the device had booted I set it up together with a WiFi network and it still worked fine (apart from disconnecting from the phone while connected with bluetooth - but that's another story I guess).
Btw: if you're in a similar situation and you want to connect the 1030 to the PC in order for Garmin Express to detect the device, you have to connect the 1030 using USB and then do a reset on the 1030 otherwise the device won't be detected neither from the PC nor from Garmin Express.
  • Hi... Tried all the above and they did not work for me. Found a great video on Youtube about a "Boot-Loop". Essentially, boot your device into mass storage mode, then delete files located in the "New Files" folder. Worked great for me! Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD52cF7O1-A
  • After saving a "fit" file and disconnecting the USB cable the unit froze up while "loading activities..", would not boot up. Resetting it (by pressing the power button 10 seconds) led to a 'catch 22' situation, device got stuck in the same point after re-powering itself. Then I got on this forum and read about Garmin Express being responsible, something about a wifi connection set up. I didn't do any of that before but still opened Garmin Express: it turns out this desktop software couldn't connect to the Edge unit because needed and update. After Garmin Express updated itself, it connected to the Garmin Edge (1030) and everything was fine. What a bunch of amateurs, these Garmin software programmers...

The saddest part about this story is that they didn't fix this issue in over three years. Ran into the exact same issue today. Thanks for the advice. How can it be that they make such wonderfull devices and don't have a clue on how to develop decend software.....
