Gear tracking on the wrist?

According to this https://www.garmin.com/en-US/newsroom/press-release/wearables-health/garmin-announces-feature-updates-for-select-smartwatches/ and this https://res.garmin.com/shared/emea/23957/February2026.pdf the 970 is getting gear tracking on the wrist with 16.28.

However, I can't find a Glance, Control or Activity with that name.

Any ideas where I can find this?

Go to an activity say Run and in settings there is a toggle Gear Selection, if you select that option, when you save a sceen comes up to select the gear

Okay thanks for that.

It seems there is a missed opportunity here. I can save a gear selection for the current activity (or the one I'm about to start) but if I then cancel out of starting the activity the gear selection I have "save"d doesn't persist. All Save does is assign it to this session.

It would be helpful if it could be saved to the Activity type and not just this instance.

Bike Commute for example cannot be automatically assigned through the Gear menus on Garmin Connect Mobile and this would be a way around that issue because for whatever reason Garmin doesn't allow automatic gear selection on the full list of activity types on the watch.

It is useful to be able to be asked at the end of the activity to assign gear but that is just making up for the fact that I can't automatically assign gear to the desired activity type because the list is incomplete.

I think that the functionality to assign default gear to an activity type should be primarily done in the settings for the activity type and not the Gear section of GCM. This is the more natural home for it and is more object-oriented. However, strangely Garmin has put these settings outside of the activity type settings rather than inside where I think they belong.

I've submitted this suggestion via the Garmin ideas website.

Sure so can I, and I've done it for "Road bike", but alas "Bike commute" and "Bike tour" for example are missing from the list so I can't assign my commuting bike to that Activity type. Garmin hasn't included every activity type in the list of available default activity types.

As suggested aa a workaround for not having option to automatically assign gear to "Bike commute" I have toggled "Gear Selection" for this activity.

However, I am not seeing the gear collections I have set up in the list, only the individual items of gear.

Is there a way to add these?

Not sure , i haven't set up any collections. hopefully future enhancements will improve the functionally of this all! At least its a good start!
